Someone who emerges with great credit from the Iran crisis is Pope Leo, who waited to issued a specific condemnation of US policy until President Trump made a threat that was clearly incompatible with a just war. He did so based on the prospect of apocalyptic disaster rather than as part of a papal political crusade against the US administration – a fantasy propagated by ultra-partisan liberal Catholics. Leo doesn’t approve of Trump, we can assume, but unlike his predecessor he’s responsible and even-handed in the exercise of his authority on the international stage.

It's possible (even probable) that Trump's unhinged threats to wipe out Iran are simply part of his negotiating strategy: act crazy to get the other side to capitulate. There's still three problems with such a strategy, even if he has no plans to carry it out (please God!). First, something tells me that such a strategy won't work against a culture such as Iran's, which highly values martyrdom against one's enemies. Second, this threat profoundly degrades America's moral standing (even more than Trump's already done), and makes future negotiations with any other country fraught with deep distrust. Finally, even threatening mass murder is thoroughly immoral and to be rejected by Catholics and all people of good will. No matter how this ends (and I pray it ends peacefully), Trump has already deeply harmed America during this war in ways we can't even begin to imagine.

Enough with this sophistry. Pope Leo is no pacifist. He has in the past explicitly praised the military calling, and indeed "the mission of the Christian soldier" to defend the weak. What he was condemning, obviously, are aggressors who claim God on their side. And when the president is now threatening war crimes, it is obscene to pretend that it is the pope who somehow doesn't understand just war doctrine.
