@jakequery Screen scaling is deceiving. For context, it’s as if you looked at Indianapolis Motor Speedway overhead in a helicopter at 1,000 ft VS 5,000 ft. And minimum separation is 1,000 ft between aircraft

#OTD in 1994: Federal Express Flight 705, a cargo DC-10 with 4 aboard, suffers a hijack attempt over Tennessee (US). Crew was injured during the incident, but was able to subdue the attacker Auburn Calloway, an employee who wanted to crash the jet for insurance fraud.

Quick thoughts. Last 48 hours have been surreal. Fire,smoke, joy, tears, adventure, coughing, depression, little sleep, wildest motocross ride of my life. . We lost 2 houses. We tried everything to save them. Everyone is safe…. Lot of work in front of us. This is not the makeover photo i wanted to share…..time to grind.

@MCCCANM In ‘19 I was on SWA flight HOU-IND. empty seats to where middle seat on both sides of aisle could be empty. Aviation nerd I am; noticed after ground crew finished loading bags, they started removing them. Issue: weight imbalance. Moved them to rear cargo hold for balancing

I’ve seen a couple empty flights lately, but I’m not concerned. TSA numbers were strong. On an empty flight, it feels like you can move wherever. You *sort of* can…but only in your row. Want to create an open seat between window & aisle? Sure! Want to move rows? Not without asking the Flight Attendant. Imagine everyone for some reason decided they want to sit in the back. Maybe TikTok or something, whatever. Anyway, everyone re-seats themselves aft. Let’s assume the jet doesn’t tip onto its tail immediately, or during pushback. It probably would, but let’s assume. Now we’re barreling down the runway. A little before I’m ready, the nose starts rising on its own. I didn’t command a climb. The nose keeps rising…I push forward on the yoke. Will the elevator have the “command authority” to overcome the imbalance & prevent a stall? I don’t know. Somebody does, but they are in a cubicle somewhere, unaware of what’s happening. How many people would have to go aft for this to be a problem? One is probably fine, everyone is a disaster. Where is the line there? Again, I don’t know. Cubicle guy does, but he assumes you’re all sitting in the seat you’re assigned & drew up a baggage loading plan splitting weight between the forward & aft cargo compartments to keep us balanced. Performing experiments in the airplane is considered poor form. It’s not so much a problem to move side to side in your row because that movement “arm” is really small. It could become a bit of a problem if everyone wanted to sit on one side, but that’s probably still manageable. The movement “arm” from front to back is a lot longer. There is a centerpoint on every jet that is its center of gravity – “CG” – like the fulcrum on a perfectly balanced see-saw. The airplane is designed to fly when the actual CG is forward or aft of this limit by some amount, but not too much. The Flight Attendants can move a few people around, but they are assuming everyone else sat in their row. If everyone had secretly sat elsewhere, it could be a big problem. Just ask & they’ll do the best they can to accommodate!
