I’m from Washington state.
It’s a shithole where I am from.
It’s just like the rust belt or Appalachia.
It’s a bunch of old machinist jobs kept afloat by Boeing contracts.
But Boeing started leaving.
And the old machinists couldn’t find work and started abusing opioids. Pills first. Then H. Now fent.
In my high school, ten kids died in 4 years. All drugs. More died in car crashes.
I think it’s worse than Appalachia-
Because at least shit in Appalachia is cheap.
For some reason Washington is expensive. Look up the housing prices sometime.
50 minutes outside of Seattle, a 1960s townhouse costs you 600k.
It’s the worst state in the country to live in. Horrible weather. Extremely expensive. And now you get taxes too.
I left when I turned 18.
It was cheaper for me to move to LA than stay.
People talk shit on California, but at least the wages match the cost.
And you get the weather.
And a diverse job market.
And the homeless problem is BETTER HERE.
Somehow Washington low rolled every single thing on the board.

Of course, you can find instances of rich people moving (and, of course, they say it was because of taxes), but anecdotes aren't data. And the data is clear.
Rich people don't move out of state because of taxes.

This is a warning for NYC as well - People can resent the wealthy, but the math doesn’t change: a small number of taxpayers fund a large share of the system. The “tax the rich” soundbite ignores how mobile people are today. When they leave, the ripple effects go far beyond taxes - philanthropy, investment, and hiring tend to follow where people live.

So what is the evidence of this? There are still Boeing, Amazon, and Microsoft jobs in Washington…I don’t doubt this may cause some business owner to move and take their business, but I bet the majority of jobs will stay in Washington, and it’ll now be more affordable for the middle class.

I'd officially like to nominate Washington as the most unintelligent political body in the whole United States. The tech sector's contribution to GDP there is the highest of any state, aka you just put a wealth tax on the country's most MOBILE work force. Wonder how this ends.

🚨BREAKING: Washington State passes their first ever income tax. Incomes over $1M/year will be taxed at 9.9%. Married couples share A SINGLE $1M exemption, so if combined incomes are more than $1M, you're getting taxed. This will obviously eventually extend beyond millionaires. Are tax breaks for small businesses meaningless? Is removing sales tax on common products like diapers and hygiene products meaningless? What about expanding free breakfast and lunch to more students? I get it's annoying when the only messaging you see are that taxes are being increased, but there is a plan.

The state of Washington used to be one of only 7 states with no personal income tax.
Now it is down to just 6 states.
Florida, Wyoming, South Dakota, Texas, Alaska and Nevada.
