@Metal_Lutheran Yes, but depending upon the lot, recognize that they probably make more selling the financing than the car. They very well might try to convince you to take a loan and just pay it off immediately. Which might sound crazy, but they get their commission.

Of all things, how is it that the rainbow sex cult, the omnicause of perversion, is what shipwrecked an entire generation, maybe two, of Christian Intellectuals? (I mean I can tell a story but it is just so ridiculous. Like being one-shotted by snorting Dr. Pepper in a tent in your back yard.)

Permanent DST passed the House but is DOA in the Senate because Southern states want more afternoon light but Northern states don't want kids to go to school in the dark. So my modest proposal: permanent DST but midwest and northeast shift one zone West. Everybody gets exactly what they want 🙌

@malongo03 But vainglory is about the lack of a why. Clavicular. The vainglorious do something just to be famous or beautiful or powerful, not to do anything with it. I suppose you could give the monster a Trump haircut.

@malongo03 The only vampire beyond the original Count D worth reading. You couldn't write it today, because things that remained fruitful subtext, as the recent AMC adaptations prove, become the text and just make it boring.

@SeanTrende @dilanesper LIke CA and NY issuing Drivers Licenses to illegals, haven't they also ruined the birth certificate as a biological sex proof by reissuing certificates with gender code?

@dilanesper We have had to provide a birth certificate for our kids' travel programs to demonstrate that they aren't playing down in age for years. It seems that should be generally sufficient, barring some particularized suspicion?

I know you guys will hate this opinion, but Megan Rapinoe is right that any bill that requires a young girl to take a $150 DNA sex test to play youth sports is stupid If you MUST gatekeep even the lowest levels of sport, you can have the parents sign a form confirming birth sex

The Mote in God's Eye - which is this great book about first contact - also has a sideline in that question. The "moteies" - the aliens - have been through exactly these civilizational collapses multiple times. So much so that they recognize when current civ is failing and store away the collective knowledge so when civ comes back, it comes back faster. But Spengler, and to an extent Toynbee, and the moties all seem to say you can't get a new thing without the complete collapse of the old. Which is very bad. What would it take to produce a self-confident elite that was both actually elite and willing to bet their lives, fortunes and sacred honor on it? Civilizationally, by way of analogy could you go from British Empire to American Empire without missing a beat, without a bronze age collapse or post-Roman pre-Carolingian west?

I'm going to write a new series of books. Hero: 20 Something male, locked out of fame, wealth, advancement by sclerotic decaying society Plot: He gathers a band of friends in roughly the same position and makes two bets: 1) That they can take, keep and govern better some territory, 2) That the society he comes from is too sclerotic to do anything. Genre: You could call it old fashioned adventure, but I'd call it neo-colonialism. Guided by the Spirits of Lee Kwan Yew and Cecil Rhodes, over the course of the books they carve out a new way.

@malongo03 That was my first rodeo - the LG google phone before google went all in on the pixel. Then I found OnePlus. I didn't want cutting edge software anything. I wanted the best hardware for a given amount of money running more or less vanilla android.

Crap. Just read the OnePlus, the brand of phone I've been using for like 7 years is leaving the US and Europe. Which means I'll have to get a different brand next time. But I love this brand. It always hit exactly what I wanted.

Yeah, everyone is spending billions on datacenters and memory is sold out for two years. And I can see some of the AI return. Like self-driving cars. And I imagine it eventually replaced a lot of "BS jobs" that exist only to move data from one silo to another silo. But I just don't see how it really goes beyond C3PO. C3PO is useful, but he's always still a droid.

@brownmp Well, I live in techie land and they keep telling me that upgrades need to be done by early 2027 because AI is going to drive up prices on computers and phones way beyond their already crazy levels. Word to the wise...I'm upgrading my phone here soon since I qualify.

The hardest transition is from 25 to 40. It’s only 15 years but you go from being a kid (at least in our culture) to being squarely middle aged. Devastating.

Have you re-watched recently any of those 1980's movies? Goonies, Gremlins, those ones the parents gave you $5 as a 10 year old to get out of the house for a couple of hours? Watched one a couple of years ago with the at the time 12 year old. Every 5 mins, "I don't remember that being in this."

It's amazing how film ratings slid. My dad was a little taken aback that we took the family to see the Wonder Woman movie because it was PG-13 and our youngest was 7. He was shocked that it was just an average action movie. Jaws was PG! There was nudity in PG movies! F-Bombs!
