Do you have idea how many descendants 10,000 people in the XV century will have in 2025? By the way, there have been 8 large waves of immigrations from Albania to Sicily and Southern Italy. The first in 1399, the 7th in 1774. Also, the communities continued to exchange people: the granddad of one of my Arbëreshë friends was born in Epirus in the early XX century. It was sent to Sicily to marry.

Also, roughly 10% of the inhabitants of Palermo have Arbëreshë roots. Add the ones like me – my Arbëreshë ancestors were likely from Bronte – whose ancestors lost contact with the community more than 5 generations ago. It’s way more than 10,000.

10k may be the people who retained language and culture. Sicilian with Arbëreshë ancestry are orders of magnitude more. E.g. all Arbëreshë I introduced myself have assumed I was one, as I have an Arbëreshë surname, but my ancestors may have lost contact more than 5 generations ago.
