While playing at FC Barcelona, Messi became a Spanish citizen in 2005 and Spanish National Team tried to recruit him. Argentine Team didn’t know Messi well but he wanted to play for his home country. So, Messi’s dad made highlight tape and sent it around. Eventually, someone from Team Argentina saw it and tried tracking down Messi’s family by lookign up “Messi” in the phone book for residents of Rosario, Argentina. Called them one-by-one until they got a hold of Messi’s grandmother and the rest is history.

I lived dangerously by writing an essay on the Falklands when I was studying Argentine history at night school in Buenos Aires. I am still too ill and woozy to recreate my argument as coherently as I'd like. But here are a few scattered points. 1/

I have always believed Las Malvinas should be given back to Argentina. I even remember getting into a physical fight when I was at primary school with another kid about this issue. I told him that Maggie Thatcher only got involved in the war to get votes and save her premiership. That was just something I heard on TV and I repeated it, but it was true. It's just a question of justice really. We do not live in colonial times anymore, it's just wrong to have a colony 8,000 miles away and stick settlers on it. And give back Gibraltar while you're at it!

@IonaItalia This has so many inaccuracies. The islands were inhabited and under Argentine authority in 1833. The British had no rights over the islands. What's the point of lying about such basic facts?

@IonaItalia The Argentine claim is purely emotional. I could almost understand if there was a sizable Argentine population there, or valuable natural resources, or some other strategic value. But the fact is that Argentina has contributed nothing to the Falklands development.

@IonaItalia Excellent thread! I wrote something similar in law school, a term paper assessing the Arg claim to the Falklands under public int'l law. TLDR: it's a political claim, not a legal one.

@IonaItalia Interesting. However I still maintain the thesis that had Galtieri not invaded, the Falklands would today be Argentine. Few in Britain knew or cared about them. The islanders didn't even have passports and were every bit abandoned by Britain. The war changed everything.

@Laboreiro Argentina wants it more, because the nation cares more and are all united. Spain is a divided country where the world cup is not a major deal and many don’t care about the national team or the flag.

Spain have played 15 semi-finals and finals at the World Cup + Euros. They've won 13. Their clubs' record in European finals is ridiculous. They are the masters of taking care of business when the finishing line is in sight. I'd be very surprised if they didn't win on Sunday.

A history lesson about Las Malvinas for all the trolls: Britain first occupied the islands in 1765 but were kicked out by the Spanish a few years later. Then in 1833 it took the islands by military force from Argentina which had inherited Spain’s claim after independence a few decades earlier and had established authority on the islands. Given their geographical proximity to Argentina this was not surprising. How do you think Britain would feel if a foreign nation 8,000 miles away took the Isle of Wight by military force and established settlers on it? Britain argues that the settlers it established on Las Malvinas want to stay British. But frankly why should their opinion count when they are living on occupied land? The honourable thing to do would be to just give the islands back to the Argentinians. But I really can't remember the last time Britain did the honourable thing.

Argentina are the most balanced team at the world cup. They can play good football, and they can give you South American style. First half against England, they took the sting out of the game, slowed it down, committed fouls upon fouls to slow the game, riled the English players up. Second half, especially when they conceded, they started to play good football. You could see pure quality.
