From the calculations I've looked at, unless your regular peak rates are really high it still may not make financial sense, if that's your only objective.

Is there a reason home batteries are all so big? My power bills are probably too low already for the outlay on a big battery to stack up.
But a smaller battery that could do a little bit of price smoothing (and ideally, provide a little bit of backup) would.

If people are willing to modify their consumption based on weather, or invest in their own assets (solar + battery) it is the cheapest ever.

I have such profound disdain for Donald Trump it's hard to spell out, but I'm sure part of it must be disgust with myself for having ever believed. I think that's what's fueling so much of the backlash. Nobody felt conned when Bush dragged us to war but Trump had us reeled in.
