Around 400 BC, Persian engineers built structures that could maintain sub-zero temperatures in the middle of a desert summer. No electricity. No refrigeration. No modern technology of any kind. Just literally physics, geometry, and an extraordinarily sophisticated understanding of how heat moves. The yakhchāl, which translates literally from Persian as ice pit, was an ancient refrigeration structure that allowed the Persian court and eventually broader Persian society to have access to cold food, cold drinks and ice year-round in one of the hottest climates on earth. The above-ground structure was a large domed building, typically built from a heat-resistant mud brick mortar called sarooj made from sand, clay, egg whites, goat hair and ash, thick enough to provide substantial insulation against the desert heat outside. Ice and snow were brought down from the Alborz mountain peaks to the north by runners and pack animals and stored in the yakhchāl through the summer. The ice came from a mountain range via a supply chain that the Persian court had been maintaining for centuries. Today we take for granted the easy ice bag from the gas station, just imagine how rare and expensive these frozen treats were in Ancient Persia. The oldest documented yakhchāl structures date to approximately 400 BC. Some are still standing in Iran today. The largest known examples could store up to 5,000 cubic metres of ice. @DavidLNorris @davepl1968 I was going to ask about that. I have an old-ish (late 80s) sound system with EL display, and it's all but unreadable now, completely faded. Sad, these things are wicked cool in the visuals arena.

@davepl1968 I really like the look but 1) Sunlight rapidly destroys the phosphor 2) Being lit destroys the phosphor 3) not being lit destroys the phosphor ... If you don't mind replacing the phosphor every few years it's super neat.

This is the dash in my 1963 Chrysler Imperial*, which doesn't use light bulbs. Back in the early ’60s, Chrysler did something wild with their dashboards: they used electroluminescent (EL) lighting instead of bulbs. Instead of shining light onto the gauges, the gauges themselves glowed. Inside the panel is a thin layer of phosphor sandwiched between conductive layers. When you apply high-voltage AC (around 100–200 volts at high frequency), it excites the phosphor and it emits that signature soft green-blue light. No hotspots, no shadows. Just an even, killer glow. The catch? Cars run on 12V DC, so Chrysler had to add a separate inverter box under the dash to step that up into high-voltage AC. It worked beautifully when new, but the electronics were expensive and not super reliable, so by the late ’60s they quietly went back to traditional bulbs. Still one of the coolest pieces of automotive tech from that era. I just bought an NOS unit (zero miles on the odometer) and have found a compatible EL transformer, so presuming I can figure out the pinout without roasting it, I'm about to have a new piece of wicked shop art! * Not my photo! But it's the same 61-63 Imperial Panelescent display in my car.

@WeiseFranklin @florestafechada Eu tive um GLi 95 "by autolatina". A elétrica dele deu bastante problema e os mecânicos não gostavam de pegar porque é de qualidade questionável. Mas eu gostava do carro, vendi porque incomodava demais.

Ontem foi dia de Senai , estou fazendo um curso de Elétrica Residencial ( 80 horas ) Não reparem, o objetivo era só fazer a ligação de 2 tomadas e duas lampas + interruptor, sem usar bitola correta de fios e sem dimensionar disjuntores. Foi usada uma fonte de 12v ( não 24 ) para ninguém correr riscos.

Não me conformei com o gráfico original do IBGE e decidi fazer minha versão: 1. O gradiente de cores original estava anti-intuitivo com marrom no topo. Decidi inverter (colocar o marrom nas piores taxas, por motivos óbvios😁) 2. Além disto, optei em usar uma escala divergente, com 3 tons em vez dos 2 tons originais. Usar 2 tons apenas não estava deixando óbvio o suficiente o que era bom e o que era ruim. É algo que não faço sempre, mas neste caso específico acho que cabe (o amarelo nos 50% é um bom parâmetro). E o azul obviamente é associado a água limpa. 3. Usei uma escala contínua em vez de categorias. Motivo: as categorias do gráfico do IBGE igualavam estados que tinham até 20% de diferença. Não é justo e não informa adequadamente. 4. O gráfico original tinha rótulos de dados com duas casas percentuais. Não é necessário, apenas ocupa espaço. Usar a taxa arredondada, sem casas decimais, informa tanto quanto e ainda deixa muito mais limpo e fácil de ler. Contem-me o que acharam.
