Children living near Driscoll's strawberry farms have a 38% higher childhood cancer rate than average. But Driscoll's can't be sued for any of it. They don't own a single farm, grow a single berry or apply an ounce of pesticides themselves They are a genetics and marketing company making $3 billion a year, licensing plant patents to over 700 farms and taking a cut. It is the most incredible example of collective defence in nature.
The giant hornet is an apex predator & is capable of killing > 40 honeybees per minute with its massive mandibles. In a one-on-one fight, a honeybee stands no chance. And when hornets arrive in numbers to raid a hive for larvae, it is a massacre.
But Japanese honeybees have evolved an almost foolproof counter-strategy.
It begins with the scout. Before a full hornet attack, a lone scout arrives to assess the hive. If it returns to the colony, it will recruit dozens more for a devastating raid.
So the honeybees' first move is simple --> kill the scout before it can leave.
But the hornet's skin is too thick for honeybee stingers to penetrate. So they evolved something more ingenious--> "thermal warfare"
They lure the scout hornet inside the hive. The moment it enters, 100s of honeybees swarm around it, forming a tight ball. They contract their flight muscles simultaneously, generating intense heat. The temperature inside the ball rises to around 46°C.
This is the kill zone.
Giant hornets have a thermal tolerance of around 44–45°C. Japanese honeybees can withstand up to 48–50°C. That 2–4 degree difference is all they need. The hornet is cooked alive from the inside out.
Simultaneously, CO₂ concentration inside the bee ball rises to toxic levels --> the hornet dies of hyperthermia and asphyxiation at the same time.
2 deg of temperature. A thousand bees. One dead hornet.

Over 10 yrs ago my asthma inhaler went generic and became cheap. But the govt said the propellant was bad for the environment, mandated a new type, and I was back to buying branded for $$$$. Recently that new type went generic as well. Cheap again! Yay! Except now the govt says this propellant is *also* unsafe, and will be banning it, forcing everyone to buy a (patented of course) newer more expensive type yet again. Funny how the timing works that drugs become “unsafe/environmentally bad” juuuust as the pharmaceutical patents run out. Very curious, that.
