Judge James Boasberg has become a symbol of a larger problem: too many district judges now behave less like neutral umpires and more like roaming supervisors of the executive branch.
His critics point to three flashpoints.
First, he blocked Justice Department subpoenas aimed at Fed Chair Jerome Powell, calling the probe politically motivated and unsupported by evidence.
Second, he drew fire in the Trump deportation fights, where the administration accused him of using unusual procedures and overstepping.
Third, his name remains tied to the FISA court period when serious surveillance failures involving Carter Page came to light.
Is it legal? Often, yes.
A federal judge plainly has authority to quash subpoenas, issue temporary restraining orders, and police compliance with court orders. That is black-letter constitutional government, not tyranny in a robe.
But legality is not the whole question. The real question is restraint. When one trial judge effectively slows, redirects, or micromanages major national policy, people are right to ask whether the bench is mistaking supervision for adjudication.
That is the rub with Boasberg. Defenders say he is doing his job. Critics say he keeps finding the outer edge of judicial power and then leaning over it. In a healthy republic, judges check the other branches.
They are not supposed to become one.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see this mentioned much when people talk of their favourite Zep albums. Don’t know why because it’s a topper. The bombastic rush of the opening song into the mystic splendour of The Rain Song is one of their great one-two punches. The whole album flows wonderfully from track to track, though. Not a fan of The Crunge, but the rest is excellent. Aye, even D’yer Mak’er.
