Labour mkt stats today show UK workforce is smaller & sicker than 5 yrs ago. Over 1m more people could be in work/progress out of low pay with more flexible work. Employment legislation alone is not enough: we need more everyday conversations in the workplace to shift norms 👇

What we want and need from work changes throughout our lives. #Menopause is often a catalyst for #careerchange, with @fawcettsociety research showing that 1 in 10 women left their job because of symptoms of the menopause. This event is aimed at helping women make positive changes

This week I’m writing about the need to rethink lifelong learning at work and how the tools to do so have changed significantly- anyone got any examples of companies adopting new skills in creative ways? Thanking you :-)

“Even when macroeconomy is at a point where using sticks to prod people is probably doing more harm than good, they are proving remarkably hard to put down.” Fab, quick read. Less punitive sanctions should go hand in hand with incentives for people incl over 50s to return to work
Sarah O'Connor@sarahoconnor_

Germany has changed tack on the unemployed: more generous benefits, more training, less punitive. If you're more worried about skills/productivity/health, this makes sense. The UK meanwhile said last week that "sanctions will be applied more rigorously"... ft.com/content/dd4e04…

Thanks ⁦@cmi_managers⁩ for adding evidence on eternal conundrum - employers bemoan young people leaving education without employability skills & struggle to recruit, yet older workers face continued discrimination. We need age irrelevant society bbc.co.uk/news/business-…

Following on from my previous tweet mentioning skiers (downhill not uphill, mind), here's the list of prescribed occupations with protected pension age 50 (possibly my most favourite thing in HMRCs Pensions Tax Manual)⛷️

The state pension age is increasing, not "the retirement age." Minimum retirement age could be anything from 50 onwards (but is planned to increase to 57 in April 2028). If you're a "downhill skier," it's 50 for you ⛷️ Anyway, I've gone for "too old" 🗳

This echoes what we heard in public workshops on making #StatePension fit for 21st century. Significant concerns re fairness, differences in life expectancy & ability to work longer. Can faster increase in #StatePensionAge avoid exacerbating inequalities? @csfoot @suzanne_khall

This article, which assumes the journalist (hi @holly_mead_!) will get a state pension, got me wondering… if someone is mid 20s now, should they assume they probably won’t get that benefit in retirement. Or is that too pessimistic? thetimes.co.uk/article/you-ne…
