I liked I SAW THE TV GLOW, but why does no one know how to respectfully disagree anymore? Deeply ironic to say they can't be reasoned with when you block people for liking movies you don't like.
Jeff Sneider@TheInSneider

Reminder: I DO block people for having bad taste. Like, how am I supposed to talk movies with someone who has I SAW THE TV GLOW in their Top 4 on Letterboxd? No offense to that movie. It’s just that, obviously, this person has bad taste and can’t be reasoned with.

I know people react badly to it because they don’t want to feel judged or condescended to, but there’s no defense for the low literacy rate here. It’s not an individual problem, it’s a complete dismantling of the national project. Now being literate is framed as pretentious.

Many adults don't have higher expectations of themselves. They project their own hopelessness and laziness on children and believe them not upholding certain standards is acceptable because that's true for them too.
Daria 💕@dariacott

These cop-outs y’all have for kids' literacy problems teach them that if something requires more effort than you're willing to put in, you give up. But also that you, an adult, can’t be bothered to give the extra effort/support they need. Teaching them they aren’t worth the fuss.

People need to stop treating reading as fandom. If you like a book, take note so you can pick up the author’s next book if it appeals. But you need to stop getting ATTACHED to authors. This parasocial style of media interaction is crippling your ability to engage with fiction.
