@kelly_o_edwards imo, the vast majority of young Catholic women are boring and/or physically unattractive. Additionally, many are seemingly unable to signal interest to a young man.

There are lots of great ladies looking for a Catholic husband. And at the same time, Catholic young men who "want to marry a Catholic girl" yet seem to be prevented by various insecurities or mysterious other obstacles. Genuinely asking as a pastor, how do we fix this??

If I, a volcel moral theologian, did a weekly write-in relationship and dating advice video, would that be interesting to people?

What does it profit to know the wisdom of the Platonists and yet not have a purified soul that knows thyself, as they exhort? What does it profit you to possess the knowledge of Peripatetics and not possess the virtues conducive to friendship, as they exhort?

What does it profit you if you know much of Church controversies, of subtle theology and philosophy, that you can dispute with heretics and unbelievers in the public forum before the eyes of men - what does it profit to know if you have not humility and are displeasing to God?

@XboxLiveGOP @WalmartThomist What do you make of Donum Veritatis, § 24: “But it would be contrary to the truth, if, proceeding from some particular cases, one were to conclude that the Church's Magisterium can be habitually mistaken in its prudential judgments…” 1/2

This is in no way a denial of papal infallibility in disciplinary matters. Everybody says that the infallibility the Pope exercises in such matters is not an exercise of his power of ruling, governing, or sanctifying, but only as an indirect exercise of his power of teaching (which is why the objects are secondary). Gasser (Mansi 52,1226) simply states that V1 didn't want to expressly define as of faith concerning the question, so it left it as a theologically certain proposition implied by identifying the infallibility of the Pope and the Church.

CT is always worthwhile, and I haven't had the chance to read this yet. I would say, however, that Bishop Fessler, Secretary-General at Vatican I, expressly denied papal infallibility in matters of discipline in his exposition of 'Pastor Aeternus' approved by Pius IX.

@WalmartThomist Reminds me of SCG ch. 45 and the way DeKoninck uses this chapter to argue against personalism.

"Each and every soul is the purer in piety when, having received less pleasure in its own private domain, it contemplates all the more the universal law and obeys it willingly and devotedly, for the universal law is the divine Wisdom." -St. Augustine, q. 79 of 83 Questions

@SSPXEnjoyer @DayakGroyper @TheRiverLock Per Christ’s promise (Matthew 16:18) we can trust in the Church & its teachings. If there’s problems, they can be sorted out. But that does not mean that a person, or a group, ought to depart from obedience to the Church. That’s all I’ll say now. I’m not interested in saying more

It is indeed trad to excommunicate a bunch of people who promote resistance to the Pope, give sacraments without ordinary jurisdiction, deny any magisterial authority post Vatican II (and to the Council itself), who justify themselves using private apparitions, etc.

@TheRiverLock Soooo trad to excommunicate priests trying to hold to the Catholic Faith in its entirety while allowing an Anglican woman “””bishop””” to lead her heretical services in the Vatican

@DayakGroyper @SSPXEnjoyer @TheRiverLock While faculties for confession have been supplied extraordinarily by the late Pope Francis, SSPX priests still do not have faculties for Mass, & they establish “missions” in dioceses without the permission of the local ordinary (the FSSP cooperates with local ordinaries) 3/3

@DayakGroyper @SSPXEnjoyer @TheRiverLock Such a stance is really what is the insurmountable hurdle which prevents the Church granting canonical regularity. The Church does not recognize the ministry of SSPX priests, evidenced by the fact that permission to celebrate some sacraments had to be supplied. 2/3

@SSPXEnjoyer @DayakGroyper @TheRiverLock For support of this, see Humani Generis para. 20. Also, it might be worth reading Donum Veritatis by Ratzinger; from this document, see paras. 24 - 31, and in general section B, entitled “B. The problem of dissent”. I think para. 24 should hopefully be helpful.

@SSPXEnjoyer @DayakGroyper @TheRiverLock Fair enough, but exactly what you said is the problem. Catholics ought not withhold assent to something simply because it is not infallible. In fact, Catholics have a positive duty to assent to the teachings of the magisterium that are of lesser note than “infallible”. 1/2
