Everyday at Springfield Walmart this is the case. I am convinced it’s why Walmart started offering discounted home delivery in the area. They didn’t want you to see foreigners with overflowing grocery carts paid for by your tax dollars.

I went to Springfield’s Walmart yesterday. Haitians with carts piled 1.5X full, flowing with meats, fish, gourmet entrees, soft drinks (milk & honey?). Young, working age. Meanwhile old underclass whites with a basket of 2, 3, 5 items. Starkest contrast. I couldn’t believe it.

A binman in Turkey’s capital found a bag of thrown-away books on his rounds and couldn’t bring himself to take it to the dump. He kept it. Other workers started doing the same. The pile has now grown into a public library of over 9,000 books, run by sanitation workers, in an old brick factory.

It’s funny because there are stacks of peer reviewed research that says following a natural disaster, the most immediate and effective forms of aid (the sort that makes people whole again) are small, often faith based, often local groups organized by very rudimentary systems (church bulletin boards) helping neighbors vs FEMA who puts a tarp over *one* hole in your roof. But instead of trying to scale up things that work and help Americans (eg fleets of Mennonites descending on your town or Team Rubicon type things) this ancient mummy of a woman wants you to be scared of the 3 guys in some fake and gay white supremacist group that’s probably funded in some way by your tax dollars.
