Now that the trip is almost over, I want to answer one of the questions we’ve been asked the most: “How are you guys able to afford a trip like this?” The answer is actually pretty simple. We saved up for this trip over the past year, and it wasn’t nearly as expensive as most people probably assume. We stayed mostly in budget hotels, and always split the cost between the three of us. Our flight to the US was also only 255€ for example. The biggest expenses were the rental cars and World Cup tickets. In total the 6 weeks here with everything combined probably cost around 6-7k (It‘s probably 6k but since we also saved money thanks to invitations like the hotel stay in Houston, let‘s say it would’ve been around 7k). I know that’s still a lot of money, but it’s nowhere near what some people seemed to think we were spending. We met other World Cup tourists who told us their trips cost more than $40,000. If you‘re ok with not living in luxury than travelling doesn‘t need to be this expensive. I’ll calculate the exact total once I’m back home.

Coming in hot late tonight because this is a memory I couldn’t let pass without sharing. Eight years ago today (July 7th, 2018), I put on my police uniform for the very last time, fulfilling the dream I’d carried with me since I was a little girl. A few months after being diagnosed with ALS, I worked my final shift as a police officer in the Royals dugout. At the time, I had no idea that one evening would become the beginning of relationships that would forever change my life. The Royals organization has become so much more than a baseball team to me—they’ve become family, walking beside me through some of the hardest and most meaningful moments of my journey. What I’ve never shared is what that night truly meant to me. In the months following my diagnosis, my world had been turned upside down. My future suddenly felt uncertain, and the dreams I’d held onto for so long seemed to be slipping away. But putting that uniform on one last time reminded me of something I desperately needed to remember: ALS could change my life, but it didn’t have to define it. That night gave me hope. It reminded me that despite the odds, despite the statistics, and despite what the doctors said, my life was still possible. I could still chase my dreams. I could still find purpose. I could still experience joy. Looking back now, I realize that final shift wasn’t just the end of my law enforcement career—it was the beginning of a new mission. One that has introduced me to incredible people, created friendships I’ll cherish forever, and shown me that even when one dream comes to an end, God can open doors to dreams you never knew were possible.
