One of the most eye-opening parts of my father's recent illness has been how hard it is to reach his doctors. In many cases, I can't get calls back. No email replies, no messages answered in the portal. One doctor's office scheduled a telehealth visit two weeks out just so I could ask a basic question about my dad's symptoms. The nursing station at the hospital doesn't even pick up the phone. I totally understand why this happens: packed schedules, poor reimbursement for phone calls, work-life balance, and so on. But, man, it's frustrating when someone you care about is struggling and you can't get through to their doctor at all. This surely damages trust in the entire profession. Patients end up angry at all doctors, even the ones trying their best. On the plus side: my dad’s primary care doctor gave me her cell number and responds to texts right away. Total rock star. Shout out to every doctor who goes above and beyond like that. It means so much.
