@HighFarndale Our Christmas eve surprise. No intervention, no shed, no supplements...just a cow calving. Luckily the weather's being kind to us so his first couple of days have been easy-ish. All nothing for a beltie (even though mum's a bit of a cross)

Merry Christmas to everyone! Meet a hardy beef beast… Belted Galloway are renowned for converting plants into excellent beef, without dietary supplements. Can you see the shorter legs? French or Belgian cattle tend to be heavier, on longer legs (that we don’t eat), whereas deep bodied native breeds are easier to ‘out winter’, which reduces costs. That shaggy coat helps to keep the rain and snow off; a belly full of plants helps them thrive outdoors. Eat real red meat and animal fat; buy the best you can.

@HighFarndale If they're anything like our (lovely) buggers, they'll still be eating the short green bits in between instead of the longer 'brown stuff' 😆

My favourite day of winter; the Solstice is the shortest day, from now on the days get longer, lighter. The beef cattle are enjoying the calm spell of weather. Listen to that grazing action… They’re enjoying ‘stockpile’, tall plants grown in summer and retained into winter. Even as the plants brown the cattle will eat them; the rumen will extract the nutrition required. Barn owls thrive here. Eat real red meat and animal fat; buy the best you can.

YOU WON’T BRIE-LIEVE IT… half the cheese is gone already 😮🧀 It’s been an udderly insane 48 hours. Since we announced our Mossgiel x Torpenhow farmhouse cheese collaboration, more than half the limited batch has already been booked. We are absolutely blown away by your support, kind messages, and wishes for this collaboration between small farms doing things properly. We had planned to keep the online store open until the end of next week – but at this rate, we may not have any left after this weekend. If you’d still like to order a 2kg full truckle, there is some availability left; but spaces are filling fast. If you’ve emailed us, thank you. We’ve had a huge number of messages in a very short time and are working through them as quickly as we can. Here's the link: mossgiel-organic-dairy.myshopify.com/pages/mossgiel…

First cow to market today. 18 month old Beltie bull calf. Bit disappointed with what he got, especially compared to others. BUT - he's a bull (not bullock), he's a Beltie (not an Aberdeen Angus, Shorthorn etc) and he was in the ring first. Any tips @herdyshepherd1 ?

@herdyshepherd1 And visible in almost any weather, there's always a black bit, or a white bit to show up 🙂 Love ours for that too

These cows become superheroes from here on into winter… what they lose on being hairy, smaller and slower they gain on being cheap to keep, healthy, low maintenance and productive. I love them.

@sweenyness @EE Bizarre. My dad was moaning about a friend's signal last night, always crap when it's foggy (they're in England) I dismissed it as nonsense...I may have to apologise to him now 😶

Feel like there’s little point in flagging it up as I’ll have to waste time gathering evidence for them, but each time it rains the @EE signal is affected. It’s rubbish.

@RrRjrobinson9 @Met4CastUK That's not what it says. I'm no denier but what about the 39 year gap (between 1980 and 2019) in that post? Data from pre 1980 n post 2019 is not the full story. Still bad, the world still should have been working on this since the 60's / 70's

If someone tells you “40°C is normal in France” they are lying or misinformed. Before 1980 40°C was recorded just 4 times. Since 2019 it has been recorded 180 times. Climate step change?

The phrase “secret beaches” should be banned. They’re not secret, it’s just you didn’t know they were there.

Thank you to friends for kind messages. Mr J got home last night. Still confused and struggles with words but improving. Waiting for a stent at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. So happy to have him home. The 🐶🐶were ecstatic to see him.

Clear EAST west divide with PARTS of the EAST seeing the best of any brightness we do get, especially the NE Thursday’s rain won’t be as bad as first forecast, but I think the Western Isles will get it bad . . .
