Foreign military adventurism is completely un-American. Our founders had many disagreements (e.g. Hamilton/Jefferson on banking) but they were very much aligned with respect to the limited, defensive role a military should play in a free society. Some relevant quotes: "War involves in its progress a train of unforeseen circumstances that no human wisdom can calculate the end. It has but one thing certain -- and that is to increase taxes." -- Thomas Paine, 1776 "The means of defense against foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home. Among the Romans it was a standing maxim to excite a war, whenever a revolt was apprehended. Throughout all Europe, the armies kept up under the pretext of defending, have enslaved the people." -- James Madison, 1787 "Avoid the necessity of those overgrown military establishments which, under any form of government, are inauspicious to liberty, and whic hare to be regarded as particularly hostile to republican liberty." -- George Washington, 1796
Jeremiah Johnson 🌐@JeremiahDJohns

The two American parties are not alike It is astonishing how much the Republican base is in thrall to a cult of personality and blindly approving of whatever the leader does.

I just spent the day at the China Auto Show and let me tell you something: the future of the auto industry is electric and Chinese. I’m not being dramatic. Just realistic. In a single hall at the show (circled), there were more EV models than there are available ones in the US. There are 17 halls here. 17!!! And they all have more EVs than in the US. They have supply chain, the manufacturing capacity, the energy, the charging infrastructure. Unless there is a major shift in momentum, they are going to dominate the entire industry. It’s just a fact.

We’re in the middle of a pretty important naval blockade standoff with a country we’ve threatened to destroy, so it seems like a weird time for the Secretary of the Navy to abruptly depart. And by “weird” I mean, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
Sean Parnell@SeanParnellASW

STATEMENT: Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan is departing the administration, effective immediately. On behalf of the Secretary of War and Deputy Secretary of War, we are grateful to Secretary Phelan for his service to the Department and the United States Navy. We wish him well in his future endeavors. Undersecretary Hung Cao will become Acting Secretary of the Navy.

Just eight years ago, many of the "serious people" sneered at the thought of EVs for the masses. In 2018, Bret Stephens wrote: "The terrible idea is that electric cars are the wave of the future, at least for the mass market. Gasoline has advantages in energy density, cost, infrastructure and transportability that electricity doesn’t and won’t for decades." At the time, I thought this might be the single worst pundit call of the ensuing decade, if not the century. The only reason this might not be correct is that Mr. Stephens has kept at it writing on March 1 that: "Trump and Netanyahu Are Doing the Free World a Favor" (on Iran). (time will tell, but oh boy) Hey @NYTimesOpinion & @NYTimesOpEd, how long are you going to let this go on? In the very least, if opinion writers get something so terribly wrong, why not force them to revisit those opinions? A small measure of accountability would benefit your paper, your readers and, most of all, the columnists themselves.

You wouldn't know it if you live in the USA or consume US media and politics, but the fight between EVs and ICEs is basically over. Internal combustion is on it's way out. First it'll look slow, then fast. Fleet turnover will lag sales. But ALL the growth globally is in EVs. If your company isn't competitive in building EVs and can only build internal combustion, you're going to be stuck serving an ever-smaller share of a shrinking global market over the next decade...
Assaad Razzouk@AssaadRazzouk

New IEA data: EV sales in emerging markets surge 80% in 2025 >India: EVs up 75% to record 2.3m EV units sold >Indonesia: 125% increase >Viet Nam: EVs hit staggering 40% share of new car sales >Thailand: EV share of new sales hit 21% >Latin America: Region saw 70% annual growth >Mexico: Sales tripled >Brazil: Sales up 40% >Ecuador and Uruguay: Experienced massive jumps of 240% and 140% The "EVs are only for rich countries and China" bullshit is officially over

Just so you get the truth and not the partisan spin here, Republicans came up with the idea of the mid-decade redistricting fight and started in Texas. Then, in Virginia, the RNC spent $0.00 to fight. Now, as drawn, the Democrats have an advantage from the redistricting fight.

@paulg Exactly right. The Holocene has been a remarkable period of climate stability -- that's the earth we know, that's our home. Below, the last 40,000 years of temperature in Greenland (f). We are putting the stability of Holocene at great risk.

@TimothyDSnyder On two levels, Trump has been absolutely consistent with this war. 1) Fraud and insider trading on a scale the world has never seen before with trades occurring minutes before market moving news out of the White House. 2) Policies & actions hugely favoring Russia.

Buddy, I didn’t even mention the change in market value. It was generating $5 billion in free cash flow. You can pick the market value yourself, and it’s still a hit! :) Circling back to the initial point. Pick your battles. When you cling to flimsy arguments, you undermine any points that are well taken. Have a nice day.

@Dougtwit23 @FredLambert In 2013, Tesla’s market value fell to a low of $3 billion. Many people thought it was overvalued at that level. Eight years later the company made $5 billion in free cash flow in a single year, 2021. That’s basically the definition of a hit!
