A study, at least, according to Van Gogh. 🌿 When Vincent arrived in Auvers in May 1890, flowers were everywhere. In just a few weeks, he painted nine floral still lifes. This one was the last of the series. In a letter to Theo (17 June 1890), he described the bouquet as ‘wild plants, thistles, ears of wheat, leaves of different types of greenery.’ 🖼️ ‘Vase with Wild Flowers’, 1890 © Private collection

What a sunset this must have been. Van Gogh painted this while staying at the psychiatric clinic in Saint-Rémy, working in the garden when he wasn’t allowed off the grounds. But the colours do more than simply depict a view. Vincent wrote that the red ochre, muted greens and dark outlines were meant to evoke the anxiety his fellow patients experienced: what he called ‘seeing red’. 🖼️ ‘Garden of the Asylum’, 1889 © Van Gogh Museum

everything often overlaps like feelings in a crowded mind, like colors that forget their borders. No rules. Just rhythm. A little chaos, a lot of truth. 🖼️ Everything often overlaps Collection

J.M.W. Turner’s path into the art world was tough. His father was a wigmaker, his mother a homemaker. Short and with a thick Cockney accent, he lacked social grace. His entire life he was infamous for his misanthropy and had no known love affairs. His mental stability was often in question. It's not hard to imagine the initial rejection by London's elites. Yet, at just 14, he secured a place at the Royal Academy of Art. This allowed him to travel and learn from the great masters. And then Venice appeared in his life. 1830s. The city’s allure captivated Turner. He was drawn to its shimmering canals and the ever-changing play of light on the water. And countles hours of obsessive work. Turner’s time in Venice was marked by both creative brilliance and eccentric behavior: 🔹Turner took countless gondola rides at dawn to capture the city’s elusive light. He became so well-known among the gondoliers that they gave him a nickname, and often chat with him about his latest artistic obsessions. 🔹On one occasion, Turner joined a group of fellow artists, including his rival John Constable, for a gondola tour. The trip turned into a competitive sketching session, with Turner’s rapid and precise work earning him admiration despite the ongoing tension with Constable. 🔹During one of his visits, he had a brief but intense conversation with Lord Byron, who shared his admiration for Venice. This encounter provided a moment of connection amid his solitary pursuits. 🔹Turner’s obsession with Venice had him exploring alone, constantly getting lost. Often, Italian children had to help him find his way back home. The result? Another proof of the importance of combining passion, a transformative personal experience, and many hours of work.
