65th Anniversary of Detective Donald Mason's Line of Duty Death On December 23, 1959, Detective Donald Mason was involved in a physical altercation with a suspect in a San Bernardino County courtroom. Detective Mason was struck across the chest by the suspect. After the incident, Donald was alone in his patrol unit and called for medical aid over the radio. Undersheriff Walter Pitts discovered Donald in pain and slumped in the patrol unit on a Highland roadway. Donald was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Donald began his career with the Sheriff's Department on August 27, 1949, after serving in the United States Army. Donald is survived by his wife, Grace, and two daughters, Jacqueline, and Kathleen.
