@Sandeman52 This is basically the whole ballgame. Kid is obviously incredibly sharp and his thesis had been so strong. Just don’t use leverage.

Also, one last thing, I’d bet anyone a million bucks this was heavily heavily coordinated among many firms and probably a media campaign. Like I’ve been saying, pure fkn FUD. Know what you own, dont use leverage, look at a long time frame, and you will be golden.

@WKCosmo Another point is Anthropic can only buy what’s for sale. The article talked about owners knowing about Anthropic use but agreed to sell anyway. If they wanted to safeguard these books for posterity, they could choose just not to sell them.

I'm going to say this again for those at the back: hundreds of thousands of TONS of books —some of them "rare" in the sense that obsolete books on Windows 95 programming or service manuals for Singer sewing machines from 1985 or books of racist jokes from 1958 are "rare"— are pulped or landfilled every year. It's illegal to digitally archive them because the PUBLISHERS won't allow it. If AI companies are diverting them to use for training on the way to being thrown out, that's GOOD, actually. The reporting on this is custom-crafted to be rage-bait for normie middle-class liberal book lovers, and you all are falling for it hook, line and sinker. Just complete suckers. Nobody is shredding Gutenberg bibles or the Codex Gigax here.

@nickkokonas First, mad respect for creating @Tock. It’s by far the best reservations platform. To your point, how is this different than Costco, who sells ribeye’s for $14/pound while Safeway sells them for $20. Small scale pilot program to start sounds like, hopefully they iterate fast.

@mkobach Isn’t the obvious answer there are thousands of grocery stores in Manhattan but there will be only 3 Mandami-Marts. Seems like doing it the way you suggest would explode the limited budget for this program.

Serious question: Why not just give NYC grocers a 30% tax rebate as long as they keep staple food prices below the benchmark, instead of creating government run bodegas?

It’s fairly absurd the Holland tunnel opened in 1927, the George Washington Bridge in 1931, and the Lincoln tunnel in 1936. The Hudson River got three vehicular crossings out of Manhattan within 9 years, and it’s been almost 100 years without a new one.

SFO airport is SO much nicer than Heathrow. Basically never any queues, no hostile commercial area where you're forced to walk through perfume-filled air. Quiet. Lots of space to sit. What explains this? Just the US being richer? Is SFO unusually nice for US?

@adsventurous_ @aporia9n Get fluent in Spanish :). A lot of businesses you interact with (power company, city taxes, etc) are only Spanish speaking and none of their websites ever work. One quirk I didn’t expect is no property taxes but you instead pay a 10% transfer tax when you buy your flat

Second homes are the classic rich-person trap, the thing that looks great on paper but that you end up regretting for a long long while. I’ve never understood the idea of becoming extremely rich only to accumulate 10 properties, 30 cars and endless material assets that need to be maintained, insured, staffed and constantly thought about. At some point you’ve basically created a small company whose only job is managing your stuff. And then the assets start dictating your life. You bought the house in Tuscany so now you feel like you should spend every summer there. You own the London flat so you keep going back even if somewhere else would be more fun. The things you bought to give yourself more options end up reducing them. If I had that level of money, I’d want the exact opposite: maximum optionality and as little dependence as possible. Spend three months in London, winter in Dubai, summer in Italy, stay in the best places and leave the second the weather, politics or taxes become annoying. Own the very few things that genuinely anchor my life, rent almost everything else and remain dependent on no asset, city or government. The economics are even more absurd here: nearly £1m of stamp duty on a £5m London flat, before service charges, repairs and exposure to whatever tax the next government invents. That alone can fund years of renting somewhere better. Ownership makes sense when it gives you stability. Beyond that, every additional asset is another small administrative job. The ultimate luxury isn’t owning everything. It’s being able to access almost anything while being trapped by almost nothing.

Chernobyl is one of the best things HBO has ever done. Released in 2019, part of this limited-series’ appeal is the fact that we get to see Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård at the absolute top of their game. The storytelling here is ripping yet totally haunting. When I think of a perfect limited-series, I think of Chernobyl.

@jodiecongirl Years ago I was in law school and my gf who was smarter in almost every other way had the most baffling block in math. Literally had a hard time comprehending the difference between these two two offers. Also could not do simple math in her head eg 7+4-3. So strange
