It increasingly seems as though the Iranian leadership is pursuing a strategy that focuses on incurring greater damage to the global economy instead of pursuing a deal. This is a strategic move, and let me explain why: Under the first MOU, Iran had an ace up their sleeve that Washington did not seem to account for. As a result of the first blockade eventually putting a strain on Iran’s oil storage in onshore containers, Iran began to fill up vessels trapped inside the blockade line. This meant that Iran, upon the blockades lifting, was able to rush out 80M barrels of oil in just 27 days. Enough for about 3 months of revenues. But now Washington has gotten wise to this strategy, and is largely not allowing Iranian vessels to fill up. As a result though, this removed incentive for Iran to agree to a peace deal. Beyond this, Washington’s decision to revoke the oil sanction waivers under the MOU has also removed further future incentive since they likely hold minimal value to Iran now. Therefore, Iran is increasingly favoring a strategy that seeks to put the global economy as close to the edge of the cliff as possible. This is to ensure that when an eventual deal IS reached, President Trump is not able to simply change his mind 48 hours and go back to war, because doing so would immediately trigger an economic collapse. That is Iran’s “hedge” that is being pursued. But it is worth noting that this is not without risk though either. Every day that goes by, Iran’s own economy is damaged as well. While there has irrefutably been a significant rallying around the flag inside of Iran, risk compounds. Day 2 has more pain than Day 1. Day 15 has more than Day 2. The second risk, and this is particularly dangerous, is it makes President Trump a cornered animal. With a rational President, one that is not so easily manipulated, they could stick with the correct decision to not escalate this conflict further because the downsides are simply too great. With President Trump though, as he becomes increasingly desperate to find an off-ramp where none now exist, Iran does risk significant escalation from the United States. Yes, Iran does hold escalation dominance, but pain is still pain. The destruction of the MOU by the United States may have been far more catastrophic than many initially assumed. It doesn’t just “make the next deal harder”, it may very well mean that “the next deal will only come AFTER far more economic pain, regardless of Washington’s offer”. Iran’s greatest deterrent to a resumption of hostilities may very well lie in taking the global economy right to the edge of disaster.

You people will say anything to defend abnormality, and it’s honestly cringe. Why are you reducing a father-in-law taking what legally belongs to his late son’s widow and children to simply “he didn’t like his daughter-in-law”? This kind of reasoning minimizes the seriousness of the issue, and that’s harmful. If he liked her during the wedding but later stopped liking her, what exactly was she supposed to do? File for divorce or end her life? Why should someone’s personal opinion of you override your legal rights as a spouse? A woman was legally married, built a family, and had children with her husband before he passed away. In what law does a father-in-law’s opinion of his daughter-in-law determine what she is entitled to or how she should raise her children? Should she hand her children over to the in-laws and simply move on? Was she only brought into the marriage to bear children? What about her own life, sacrifices, and the years she invested in that marriage? Nigeria has countless widows who have been displaced and left with nothing, not because their husbands failed to provide, but because attitudes like yours embolden in-laws to take what rightfully belongs to widows and their children. I’ll end with this: every Nigerian woman should have money set aside for legal representation. Hopefully, she’ll never need it, and the money can be used for something else. But she should never be left completely helpless when faced with situations like this.

America no longer asks whether a Chinese project works. It asks how quickly it can be killed before the world notices it works better. When an empire can no longer lead, it tries to cripple those who can.

As reporting is circulating this morning about potential discussions for a new deal between the United States and Iran, I want to discuss one of the core problems to what I am seeing. Trump isn’t being realistic… at all… Based at least on the initial reporting, President Trump is trying to essentially strike a deal that reverts back to the terms of the original Memorandum of Understanding. Put nicely… that’s ridiculous. Unfortunately for Trump, unfortunately for everyone, the Trump Administration took guidance from the Lobby and Hawks that called for Washington to revoke the oil sanction waivers (General License X) that were issued under the MOU. Even worse, during the 10-day wind down period, Treasury added an escrow account mechanism. This means that any oil sold during this window would be controlled by the United States. Of course, Iran would never willingly do that, so it was essentially torched without notice. This is significant because the oil waivers were the only real concession that Iran received up front in the original MOU. Because the Trump Administration revoked them without notice, they cannot simply “reissue them” again in a future MOU. This is because countries that MIGHT have purchased Iranian oil under the original deal know that the US is willing to revoke them without notice. Therefore, there is no durability anymore, and they effectively lose all value as a future concession. On top of this, the United States also never released any of Iran’s frozen assets during the 27 days the MOU was in effect, and this only further degraded any trust that the United States will hold up their end of the bargain in any deal. To take it a step further, before the MOU was “officially” destroyed, the United States imposed new sanctions on Iran, which explicitly breaches Article 9 of the MOU. President Trump putting forth an “offer” that essentially reverts back to the prior terms of the original MOU… that’s simply delusional. He knows it. Iran knows it. It’s not a serious offer. The problem with this though, is it fundamentally guarantees that if Iran holds the cards, which I think most everyone understands that they do, President Trump WILL be forced to agree to far worse terms under a future deal than he received in the original MOU. As much as I hate to say this… the odds the Iranians accept these terms are zero. Nada. Zilch. It’s an entirely unrealistic set of terms from Trump, and this will only signal to Iran that the United States is not serious, and not willing to make a real deal to end this war.
