Interesting article in the New York Times today:
"The more fixated we are on mental health, the more sensitive we become to anything that might qualify as a symptom and the more we use clinical language to describe normal emotional experiences like grief, burnout and loneliness. This broadening of what we think counts as a disorder — known as concept creep — encourages us to pathologize ordinary life and see ourselves as mentally unhealthy."

“ Girl Power “ has done damage.
I am so over all the slots students are put in to.
They’re all learners - let’s just teach the best research proven ways.
To me this also means stop the unrelenting focusing on the ‘outliers’ in everything as a reason not to make pragmatically sound ed choices most students. That outlier focus is paralyzing .

@JustBeachy123 @RubinReport I keep asking people since Covid ; where are the Puerto Ricans? So obvious to me they have been pushed out of NYC housing in favor of non-citizen illegals .
English

@RubinReport Especially Puerto Ricans who are of mixed ethnicities and races, including Irish, Italian, Portuguese, French, Middle Eastern, and North African?
We especially hate the divisive rhetoric and these despicable actions, and want it GONE TODAY!!!

The Italians, Jews, Irish, Greeks, Puerto Ricans and all other real New Yorkers are slowly forming old school pact to save NYC…

The Five Sisters Cup will feature 4/5 tall ships designed to a common specification by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany. Each barque has 3 masts, and a crew over 250.
Gorch Fock II 🇩🇪
Eagle 🇺🇸
Sagres 🇵🇹
Mircea 🇷🇴
The Gorch Fock I, Eagle, Sagres, and Mircea are 1930s contemporaries. The first three were purpose-built training vessels for Germany with Mircea built for Romania. After the war, the German vessels were redistributed as reparations.
Gorch Fock II was built as a replacement for Gorch Fock I in the 1950s. Unfortunately, Gorch Fock I is no longer seaworthy and currently resides in Stralsund as a museum.
The last time all these ships saw one another was for the 🇺🇸 Bicentennial in 1976.
Gorch Fock II claimed the Five Sisters Cup then, but who will claim it in the days ahead?

Yesterday was my final day as Director of National Intelligence. I declassified and released never-before-seen documents exposing the truth about Fauci directing millions of US taxpayer dollars to fund dangerous gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab, worked with the Intelligence Community to suppress the truth about his actions and hide the virus’ lab-leak origins, and lied to Congress while under oath in 2024. It’s time you know the truth. Go to ODNI.gov to see for yourself.

Nuances of referents and how to teach them! (Do it while reading, not a separate lesson). This is something I've been unclear on how to do. It's also a comprehension problem invisible to many (most?) teachers.
From @benzulauf2's excellent talk. I will be digging into this more

@0Beanie05923291 @marcportermagee @MindofTorres Exactly! As a teacher in a closing Catholic School- we need to be more traditional
And not less…sigh.
English

@marcportermagee @MindofTorres This is why I get so confused (and frustrated) when I hear about Catholic schools that are adopting the same “innovative” approach, curriculum, or practices as public schools. Why would they do that?!

I never met Gordon Wood, but I have a story about him.
In one of my grad school seminars, we read Wood’s Creation of the American Republic. The sheer erudition and evidentiary depth of the book bowled me over.
Back then, before kids and before life accelerated to warp speed, I used to call my mother every Sunday to catch up. Lots of times, we ended up talking about what I was reading that week in my grad seminars or for leisure. Mom had an omnivorous mind, and she was always looking for something else to read. She was a true intellectual—curious about almost everything, always eager to integrate new arguments or ideas into her existing schemas of how the world worked or to have those schemas challenged and changed.
When we talked that particular Sunday, I think I tried to describe to her part of Wood’s argument about the relationship between the state constitutions during the Articles of Confederation era and the federal Constitution. Maybe I was tired, maybe I didn’t completely understand her questions, but the end result of the conversation was that Mom had questions about Wood’s argument that I didn’t answer satisfactorily. I told her that she should probably just read the book, and we said goodbye.
She did eventually read the book, but the next Sunday, Mom started our conversation by saying, “Well, I had a lovely conversation with Gordon Wood this week.” For a split second, I thought she was joking, but then I remembered who I was dealing with. I started to sweat. “How?” I asked. A whole variety of unlikely scenarios in which the foremost historian of the American Revolution and my mother, who lived in Wichita, Kansas, might have met ran through my mind. “Oh, I just looked up his office phone number on Brown’s website and called, and he picked up!” Mom said. I decided I would have to find another profession.
As it ended up, Gordon Wood spent about an hour on the phone with my mother answering her questions about the Constitution. Ever since, I’ve had a soft spot for the man when I imagine him picking up the phone in Providence and finding Becky Elder from Wichita on the other end of the line. His generosity in that moment spoke very well of him.
Rest in peace, professor.

@JamesAFurey My school, incarnation, in Washington Heights NYC is closing in 8 more days. Very depressing. The Arch of NY is particularly inept …
Leadership is weak all over the Catholic World it seems… Battle on.
English

It honestly pains me to say this, but Catholic education will not compete with public education if it continues to offer pay as low as fifty percent of the surrounding schools.
It especially won’t if it deemphasizes what makes Catholic culture unique and worthwhile and waters down what it offers in pursuit of voucher money.
The Church needs to get involved in fixing this, or we’ll continue to see Parish schools go under left and right.
This is especially important because what better beacon to the world that Catholicism will bear good fruit than a well-functioning, effective school system.

@freshdirect you’re really trying to lose customers to other services, aren’t you? You took away my Sunday morning deliveries which I’ve had for 20 years. Now you’re out of 4 minute meals most of the time and pushing bigger entrees you can’t take to work. Really stupid.

@TulsiGabbard @ODNIgov I am so sorry your husband has such a serious health issue and I thank you .
English

I am deeply grateful for the trust President Trump placed in me and for the opportunity to lead @ODNIgov for the last year and a half.
Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026. My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. He faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months. At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.
