Social media attack mode behavior has made our speech simpering, cowardly, defensive, and weak. It happens to all of us. It's crept into what I say, too. "In my opinion"-as if it weren't obvious already that one is expressing an opinion "Just my two cents" "Just my view" "To me. . ." followed with a repetition like "in my opinion." Making declarative statements without hedges and softeners feels dangerous to people today. Having an opinion is seen as something to pre-apologize for. -J
