For years I've been telling myself to invest properly. For years I kept putting it off and making poor financial decisions. I have decided to document my investing journey to keep myself honest. It won't be perfect, but it'll be better than not at all. Starting 2026 with this:

When should the average person reach $250,000 invested in the stock market??

I don't really talk about pensions a lot. Are you above or below the median for your age? I'm 40 and my SIPP is £55k. Not sure how to value my workplace DB pension. I think many don't take pensions seriously enough.

@NXT4EU For two reasons: 1. Salaries are triple 2. You are comparing the cheapest IKEA shit (the EU), with an high-end product (ISA).

@judeinlondon My 'service charge' if you can even call it that is lumped into the rent and is literally like £6 or something so small I couldn't care less. It was actually lower this year as the HA didn't need as much funds for keeping the estate nice. Rent increases as any rent does as well

@judeinlondon Lot of misconceptions in the replies here. I pay £850pm, mostly mortgage (on a 40%). I am still building equity where a rental I wouldn't. All pets are allowed. I can do any decorating I want. I am still building equity & I can buy 100% when my mortgage renews 🤷‍♂️

How did people get scammed into doing shared ownership. What do you mean I pay a deposit, I pay a mortgage, I pay RENT on top of that AND I only own less than 50%?!?!

Let's test that. If an 18 year old saves $26 a day by eating the cheap sandwich instead of the $28 lunch mentioned, that's $9,490 a year. In five years, that's $47,450 if you save NOTHING else. That's a 20% down payment for a $230k home at 23. If you wait until 28, it's $94.9k.

@2147mill 8% utilising the full 20k is actually pretty big tbh. 1666+ per month spare to whack into the ISA isn't any small feat

60% of UK adults have no ISA. Only 8% use the full £20,000 allowance.

@cloudbets_ That would be the risk you would be taking. I’d imagine if you had a TP on then it wouldn’t be a feature you’d use on that stock. But something where you plan to hold 20 years, not so much.

Idea for a new feature on Trading 212: a customisable 'sell-lock' option, similar to the cooling-off periods used in responsible gambling. Imagine being able to set a period, from a couple of weeks to several years, where you simply cannot sell your investments. This would prevent panic selling during market downturns, helping you stay focused on your long-term goals by removing the temptation to make emotional trades.
