@TriStarNetwork There’s not one smoking gun answer. Last years roster was not impressive by the standards of a team hoping to compete for an SEC title or playoff spot, nor is this one.

This is what Paul Finebaum (and a lot of Tennessee fans) are panicking over: An 8-4 season where: • 3 of the losses were to CFP teams • the other was to a team that’s make CFP any other year All with a QB who: • Arrived AFTER spring practice • Had a tumor on his throwing arm that clearly affected him down the stretch Tennessee struggled defensively and lacked size. So what did they do? ✔️ Hired one of the top defensive coordinators in the country ✔️ Brought in an elite defensive staff ✔️ Added a championship-winning Strength & Conditioning staff Doesn’t sound like “the wrong direction” to me🤷‍♂️

A lot of Tennessee fans saying “I trust a Rick Barnes defense”…do you actually? At Tennessee, prior to Justin Gainey, Barnes had 1 of 5 defenses in the top-40. The 8 years prior at Texas only 50% of those teams had a top-40 defense. Vols fans might want to rethink things.

@coachclark609 Said assistant coach was strictly the defensive coach, and having a great defensive team (as noted multiple times) isn’t historically the thing under Barnes. More than happy to agree to disagree.

@mcblimp95 Having multiple great individual defensive players seems more directly related to having a good defensive team than having one good assistant coach on a 6 man staff. But who knows? Agree to disagree I suppose.

@coachclark609 More than two players play defense within a 8+ man rotation, and more than those two boasted impressive defensive numbers these last 5 seasons believe it or not.

@mcblimp95 I am relatively certain that Zakai Zeigler and Jahmai Mashack being on the rosters had slightly more to do with that than Justin Gainey.

@coachclark609 He also only had 3 top-40 defenses in 13-years before Gainey became an assistant coach at Tennessee. Data is data.

@mcblimp95 Heck, maybe it won’t, but the implication was that Justin Gainey was somehow the backbone of the defensive end of the floor there. Rick was an SEC Championship Coach at Tennessee before Gainey was even on staff.
