Who is setting the fires and acting like rioters around Denver University? Is it students or outside agents agitators? People acting like they were recently at the State Capitol bringing lessons learned to University Blvd. #Denver @DenverPolice

How far outside your house can you detect your AirTag? A pacemaker is probably a third to a tenth of the RF power. Construction materials used in the Tucson area are going to have a lot of attenuation. And a pacemaker does not transmit a signal continuously. This is much more of a publicity stunt than something that will actually work. Also helicopters in general create a lot of RF noise.

Investigators say they’re using a “signal sniffer” on a helicopter to detect Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker. Pacemakers can communicate in two ways: short-range RF medical telemetry, typically in the MICS band around 402–405 MHz with extremely low power output, or Bluetooth Low Energy if paired to a phone or monitor, operating in the 2.4 GHz band with similarly limited power to preserve battery life. RF telemetry generally only works within a few feet to about 10–20 feet, and in many cases closer to a couple of meters, which would require the helicopter to fly very low and slow to have any chance of detecting it. Pacemakers also do not transmit continuously. They operate in low-duty cycles or respond when a compatible device is nearby. Bluetooth is also low power and short range, typically around 30 feet or less in real-world conditions. For context, pacemaker batteries usually last 5–15 years, with an average of 7–10, so the device would likely still be active unless it was damaged, shielded, or separated from its paired phone. Investigators would only pick up a signal if they are actively sniffing for it with equipment tuned to the correct frequencies, but it could still be detected even if she were deceased, as long as the pacemaker remains intact and powered.

@trophyjoey @Nerdy_Addict Closer than that due to the additional path loss induced by the structure. And the way most homes are built around Tucson it’s a lot of loss.

@Nerdy_Addict So are you telling me the helicopter has to hover 10-30 feet above every home in Tuscon to get a connection?

@PhilHollowayEsq @mktruecrime @aronberg The RF noise floor is too high on a helicopter to search for a very weak signal effectively. A drone that doesn’t generate its own RF noise and can fly very low and slow would be much more effective. It’s currently more of a publicity stunt than a real effective tool.

On Wednesday’s episode of @mktruecrime, Matt Murphy told me and @aronberg that a helicopter should be used to look for a pacemaker signal from Nancy Guthrie Now it’s happening, evidently
Brian Entin@BrianEntin

Investigators have used what is called a “signal sniffer.” It is a small device that was sent in and attached to the Sheriff’s helicopter. It can detect Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker signal. The helicopter has to stay low and move slowly for it to work.
