Having 'Beloved' ranked as the second-greatest novel of all time is absurd. It's not even Toni Morrison's best novel, arguably not even her second-best. The list does include some excellent choices though, 'The Left Hand of Darkness' by Ursula K. Le Guin and 'Pedro Páramo' by Juan Rulfo, even if the latter is placed far too low. At the same time, the absence of 'Under the Volcano' by Malcolm Lowry is indefensible. Excluding Philip Roth completely is, perhaps, even more egregious.

This tweet, with its extreme claims, caught my attention because Elon Musk reposted it. I asked Gemini if any of these claims are accurate. It assured me that they are not. I then asked Grok, which replied that the first four are in fact accurate, and it provided details and sources supporting its response. So, I went back to Gemini, copied and pasted Grok's reply into a prompt, and asked Gemini what it thought about what Grok had just told me. Here's Gemini's response: "I stand corrected... I apologize for my previous response. I attempted to separate fact from social media exaggeration but failed to properly verify the depth of the horrific testimonies from the actual trials like Operation Bullfinch and the Rotherham inquiries. The details you cited from Grok accurately reflect the devastating and brutal reality of what these victims endured."

Lattimore's work is an incredible achievement and shows how myth can continue even in our age. Lattimore maintains the flow of the Greek in the English and doesn't import any interpretation. He keeps things simple and thus says so much more. His rendition of polytropon as a man of "many ways" is a prime example. His translation flows as does the Greek and shows the simple relations in which human beings live and dwell and die, for these simple relations are all there really is, as the Homeric authors also knew.

@JohannesAchill Richmond Lattimore was the father of my dad's colleague, who gave me a copy. I had his Iliad since I was 14 and still read it over and over. Always a new book, thanks to Homer, but also thanks to Lattimore.

The Guardian’s panel has chosen the 100 greatest novels of all time and has put BELOVED second. That is among the most ludicrous aesthetic judgments in the annals of Western culture. Embarrassing tokenism.

The humanities shine when they illuminate civilizational transitions, such as the spread of agriculture or industrialization. Now, as we navigate the uncertainties of AI-based existence, they should be drawing on their accumulated scholarship to help us understand the present moment. Alas, many humanists are too fixated on identity politics to even notice this new opportunity to stand out.

I wish Gen-Z would look past the title of 'Coddling' to see that it's really not a rebuke of them as much as it's a critique of the mental habits they were taught by the, in some cases, well-meaning adults who raised and taught them.

FFS, NYU students can't not become self-parodies given half a chance. I have many disagreements w @JonHaidt but would have welcomed him as a graduation speaker. Few have done more to expand good intellectual diversity and ferment in academia. Let him speak! HT @benryanwriter

“Slavery is over. Jim Crow is dead.” Rep. Wesley Hunt pushes back on what he calls “reinvigorated talk” of Jim Crow, while defending the idea that America is a Christian nation: "As someone who is a direct descendant of a slave, as someone whose great-great-grandfather was born on a plantation, I can assure you, slavery is over. Jim Crow is dead." "I am a Black man representing a White-majority district in Texas, the great-great-grandson of a man born on a plantation stands before you today as a proud, conservative Republican from Texas. As a believer and follower in Christ."

Apparently there’s a NYU commencement dust-up over my dear friend and co-author @JonHaidt. Student government reportedly called to disinvite him, calling his campus critiques too divisive, which rather proves "The Coddling of the American Mind” had a point. And for the record, we never liked the title.

By the way, Emily Wilson intentionally positioned her translation as a culture war topic. She wanted people like me to post about how woke it is. The outrage marketing is good for Emily Wilson, and it’s good for me. But it discredits modern academia as a whole. Which is also good

As a principled libertarian, I mostly ignore it when Trump sics the FBI on his critics, threatens broadcasting licenses, and celebrates the murders of protesters. But when a few kids at NYU criticize Jon Haidt, well, that's where I draw the line.
