@gayguycandleco that's politics, man. you wanna run in a dem primary, there are going to be consequences if you didn't vote for the dem nominee for president in the last dem primary! if the Stevens camp is being a little tricksy with what that means-- I'm sorry, you set yourself up for that.

I'd also like to point out that for all the shit Schumer gets, the only plausibly competitive state where the candidate is set and he failed to find a legitimate, primary-winning Establishment Candidate was Maine. Talarico's not great, but he's the best they had and the Dems got Peltola in Alaska, Cooper in NC, Turek in Iowa, and Brown in Ohio. I don't think the Dems are going to win the Senate, but they found literally the only candidates who could even make Alaska, Ohio, and Iowa competitive and got the one candidate capable of running away with North Carolina no matter who the Republicans ran. Even if Turek loses by 5-6, that's a Trump +13 state! If they ran a candidate of his quality in Maine they'd win by 10!
Swann Marcus@SwannMarcus89

The problem Maine Democrats have is that their bench is dogshit due to attributes that are unique to Maine itself. It's not even a swingstate anymore but Collins outperforms every Republican by so much that you still need to field a competitive candidate and they don't have anyone In Maine, the only statewide office that actually gets elected is governor (all the other executives are appointees or elected by the legislature), so there aren't any attorneys-general, Lieutentant Governors, or Secretaries of State with a proven trackrecord of winning elections, like you'd have in Arizona, Virginia, or Georgia. Normally you could just run the two term governor for senate, but Mills is the only candidate older than Collins and one of the biggest concerns voters have with Collins is her age. Shenna Bellows is one of the frontrunners to replace Platner and the last time she won an election was a state Senate race in 2014, after which she lost to Susan Collins by 37 in the 2014 US Senate election. Obviously the state is very different politically today, but one of the top candidates for governor hasn't won an election in 12 years and was last seen losing to the same opponent by almost 40. That's one of the top two possible replacements. The other is Troy Jackson, who's got tons of problems due to his association with Platner and never even won a primary at a higher level than a State Senate election. He's run for higher office twice and lost in the primary by 50 the first time and came in third the second. On top of that, they only have two congressional seats and their actual best possible general election candidate (Jared Golden, who would obliterate Collins) retired because he hates politics. Compare that to Pennsylvania, which elects the Governor, Attorney General, Auditor General, and Treasurer, and has 17 congressional districts + big city mayors. The Democrats have no problem finding candidates there. Josh Shapiro - who would be a big favorite to beat McCormick in the 2030 Senate race if he decides to run - first won statewide elected office as Attorney General, which is elected by the legislature in Maine, not by voters. There are literally no available Democrats in the state who have a proven track record of winning outside of state legislature elections with fewer than 20,000 votes except for Mills, an 80 year old woman who doesn't even seem motivated to run and only did because Schumer begged her to. It's pretty obvious the reason it took the establishment so long to find a candidate to oppose Platner was because Schumer spent months desperately trying to talk Golden into it and he refused

We @SearchlightInst enjoyed collaborating with @zeteo_news on this M4A polling. It gets at the question of why M4A starts off reasonably popular but gets less popular as people learn specifics. (Tl;dr: it’s because people don’t want to be forced off their private insurance.) 1/x

Getting to Medicare For All will be a piecemeal process. Medicare-For-All-Who-Want-It seems like a solid incremental step to showcase to the many (understandably!) skeptical Americans that the federal government can actually effectively handle providing healthcare for every American — and not just turn it into a bureaucratic nightmare — before pushing for the Big Kahuna.
Searchlight Institute@SearchlightInst

NEW: We partnered with @zeteo_news to field an impartial, first-of-its-kind survey about the public's feelings toward Medicare for All. The survey included multiple descriptions of Medicare for All in an effort to test what parts of the policy most affect its overall support or opposition. The result? Support peaks at 52% — but declines to 40% when voters are told a federally administered program would replace private health insurance (including employer-sponsored plans) and be funded through significantly increased federal taxes. If given the choice to enroll in a federal program, 70% of voters say they would prefer to stay on their current health insurance. zeteo.com/p/medicare-for…

As soon as the team became aware of the rape allegations against Graham Platner we advised he suspend his candidacy, and in the following days worked to wind down the campaign. Like so many of his supporters, I’m deeply disappointed.

there are a lot of things that i said in texts that i wish i'd been braver to post before this whole thing fell apart bc now it's all kind of obvious but one of them is that dudes who go to brown and yale fucking law who disparage successful strivers in politics as "vat-grown" creatures deserve to be mocked as pathetic posers, not held up as the future of left-of-center politics

It's kind of ironic that Beavis & Butthead here said that voters don't want candidates "grown in vats," but their entire process of recruiting Platner was a sort of mad science experimenet/talent search based solely on outward appearances with no vetting whatsoever.

“While the Platner campaign remains focused on distracting from the job of defeating Susan Collins in November with false accusations against us, the Maine Democratic Party remains hyper focused on developing a representative, transparent and inclusive process to select a new nominee when he chooses to withdraw from the race. While we may be frustrated with Graham Platner’s continued efforts to manipulate this process, we are so thankful for his supporters and all of their efforts to defeat Susan Collins – they are a vital part of our Party and deserve to participate in an open process to select Platner’s replacement.” - Devon Murphy-Anderson, Executive Director of the MDP

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a staunch supporter of Israel who has also criticized Netanyahu’s leadership, has a substantially higher net favorability than either Mamdani or Netanyahu. 41% percent of respondents view Shapiro favorably, compared with 21% who view him unfavorably.
Jacob N. Kornbluh@jacobkornbluh

Mamdani more popular than Netanyahu among U.S. Jews. The AP poll suggests that Mamdani’s positions on Israel have not prevented him from maintaining a net-positive image among American Jews overall. forward.com/news/836468/ma…

@petersterne @DailyLibber bullshit. he was running against a loser who had already dropped out. if anyone from the gov race had been up against him after the first set of assault accusations had come out he would have been dead in the water. they should pick whoever can win, alignment is irrelevant.
