Jeff Bezos: "When the data and the anecdotes disagree, the anecdotes are usually right." In an interview with Lex Fridman, the Amazon founder shared this key insight on understanding customer needs. Bezos explains that in these cases, "it doesn't mean you just slavishly go follow the anecdotes." Rather, "you go examine the data because it's usually not that the data is being miscollected, it's usually that you're not measuring the right thing." The key is truly understanding "what are the demands of customers in our market." Even uncomfortable truths. He shares an early example at Amazon where metrics showed customer service wait times under 60 seconds. But "we had a lot of complaints that it was longer than that. And anecdotally it seemed longer than that. I would call customer service myself." So in a weekly business review meeting, when the data was presented, Bezos called customer service on the spot. "We just waited in silence." The actual wait time was "really long, more than 10 minutes." This shows the importance of being data-informed rather than data-driven. Metrics shouldn't be blindly followed without connecting them to actual user experiences. As Bezos says, "you have to get people’s attention and they have to buy into it, and they have to get energized around really fixing things." The takeaway for product managers is clear - qualitative user feedback reveals where your metrics may be missing the mark. Dig into those signals, understand what users really care about, and be ready to fix things even if it means facing hard truths. TL;DR: • Anecdotes show where data metrics may be flawed • Be data-informed, not just data-driven - connect to real user experiences. • Example: Amazon wait time data was wrong compared to user complaints

Software works at scale when it’s as simple as possible. Every click is friction. Every new mental model is friction. Every component of pricing is friction. Every question of trust or security is friction. Whatever you choose to build, the simplest software usually wins.
