People arguing against tool use are missing out. Walking is great, I love it, but I am not going to walk to the airport. I love elmination of drudgery for myself and for my colleagues. My work isn’t less meaningful by using tools. Keep up the great work. The golden age is coming for everyone, even the curmudgeons and luddites.

People ask us why we are enthusiastic about AI and other new technologies when we print our newspaper on real paper and shy away from social media and the internet. The answer is simple: Used correctly, AI and being human are two sides of the same coin. AI frees knowledge from increasingly corrupt big institutions and guilds and puts it back our hands, which gives us more leverage over our time and our product. AI is a value-add, while social media is a time-suck — labor that we are required to do for free according to someone else’s rules in order to maintain a connection to a part of our audience. @countyhwy will never use AI to write or illustrate any part of our newspaper, because reading AI-generated content makes you dumber and less human. Thats the way it’s built. Using it that way shows contempt for what makes us human. Its like listening to music with no structure and half the notes missing. Reading the printed word makes you smarter and more human. Using AI to do drudgework gives you and your business more time to excel at your core proficiencies - which in our case means reporting, writing and editing. Learning how to use to AI to run our backend makes time for our young editors to write and edit — which is the core part of their jobs, and helps us put out a better newspaper, printed on real paper, with real ink.

It's not JUST catching murderers (but it is helping catch them). It caught the communist that burned the Tesla body shop. It catches child abductors. Everyone in my neighborhood has cameras, and since they went in, property crime disappeared. Vote against them if you don't like them. But chopping down Flock poles is no better than the George Floyd rioters burning down Lake St because the Blue Team told them to be mad about a fentanyl overdose. Lawlessness can't be solved by more lawlessness (IMHO).

Deployment: 2-4 passes/season works in studies, but continuous night runs via autonomy would best handle weed flushes. Fleet of small rovers could cover big acres efficiently at low per-unit cost. Hurdles: AI detection reliability, energy, and throughput at scale. Strong fit for precision autonomy and sustainability.

I might have just had a breakthrough. It turns out lasers that can burn weeds are cheaper that I thought. The real breakthrough would be figuring out how to mount it on a small autonomous rover vs a large tractor-pulled implement.

My greatest accomplishment as a writer. I'll tell you. In 1990 I moved to Livingston, Montana, a town of about 7000. Not long afterwards, the federal government decided to close old downtown post offices across America and replace them with car-friendly facilities on the outskirts. Well, as it happened Livingston's downtown post office was the grandest building in town, with a wide marble outdoor staircase that functioned as a center for sharing news, miscellaneous socializing, and nonstop acts of courtesy as people helped others carry packages or negotiate the sometimes icy steps in winter. When I saw that our post office was marked for closure -- a grievous wound to our soul and our small commercial district -- I wrote an essay decrying the whole policy for Time Magazine. In short order, Montana's senior US Senator at the time, Max Baucus, swept into the Livingston post office with aides and made a scene. The kind of scene thst politicians serving their real constituencies should make. And not only was our local post office spared, the overall federal policy was changed, which benefited town centers across the country. As I say, best thing I ever did with written words.

Everyone wants to be the hero in their own movie. Frankly, we need these kids to become better writers. Write a better script. Make a better life. Every young person frustrated by not finding Mr/Mrs right needs to learn one thing. If you want a catch, you need to be a catch. Be better, kids.

I can imagine a young person thinking she might be a great athlete. Or a writer of consequence. Or smart in business. Or a doctor and a healer. But imagine a young person fancying himself the agent of social justice in our time. The avenger of our sins as a society. Terrifying.

@amandafortini Brilliant choice. Even weirder/cooler is Goblin Valley State Park in Utah although it's a bit of a drive. Another fun (vegas-close) visit is Cottonwood Station in Blue Mountain for breakfast or lunch and then Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.

We did go outside and we did have fun! Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.
