Some lucky visitors to the Forbidden City may come across the "royal cats," top online superstars in China and the cherished little guards of the ancient palaces. In the Forbidden City, you can find over 200 registered cats. Many of these cats have their names, fan base, and cultural merchandise. Most "royal cats" are either decedents of Chinese emperors' royal pets or guards of the Belvedere of Literary Profundity (文渊阁), the imperial library in the Forbidden City. Many emperors in ancient China adored cats; some even formed royal institutions to care for these little fur balls. Many of the royal cats even had their human servants. Those cute creatures inspire many royal artworks, such as paintings and sculptures. Those felines may no longer hold royal titles due to China's elimination of the imperial system. Still, they've taken over Chinese social media and are now considered "cyber kings and queens". Every one of the felines has their distinct characteristics, style, and group of devoted followers. They have also been a source of revenue for the Forbidden City since their likeness appears on various cultural items, including pillows, notebooks and more. The sale of cultural products brought in over 1.5 billion RMB for the Forbidden City in 2017, with the cats playing a significant role in that earnings. Once skinny and small, Papa (帕帕, picture 1) is my favourite Forbidden City cat. The staff of the Forbidden City previously thought Papa had problems with his diet, and that's why he was so skinny, so they experimented with various foods to satisfy him. It came to light that a different pack of cats bullied Papa, and he was scared to venture out of its burrow for food. The staff gave special attention to Papa, and it is now one of the chubbiest cats in the Forbidden City, yet it retains its shyness and rarely bullies other cats. What a cutie. Ruyi (如意, picture 2), Aobai (鳌拜, picture 3), and Caicai (菜菜, picture 4) are three other cats I love. [Photo by 克查]
