@MDNnewss The 75% illicit market share figure as exaggerated “storytelling.” The statistic stems from a study commissioned by BAT itself.. Bias 👀 BAT is cutting employees while still importing cigarettes and maintaining profits. BAT is playing victim. This exit is a Win for SA.

Breaking news British American Tobacco South Africa to shut down Heidelberg plant over illegal tobacco trade British American Tobacco South Africa (BATSA) has announced it is shutting down its only manufacturing plant in Heidelberg, Gauteng, citing the rapid growth of the illicit tobacco trade as the main reason. The company says illegal cigarettes now dominate much of the local market, making operations unsustainable. The closure is expected to affect more than 200 workers and marks the end of decades of cigarette manufacturing at the facility.

@ThaboNk21754989 @XFactor079 @TaxJustice_SA No one is denying illicit trade, but the size of its impact is not nearly as devastating to the companies profits. The data around illicit trade in SA was procured by a company sponsored by BAT- their findings are bias & in alignment with a much bigger cost reduction goal of BAT

@TrolleyPuller @ASZulu BAT is cutting employees while still importing cigarettes and maintaining profits. This is less about curbing illicit trade & more about overhead reduction. At least 15 other cigarette producers in SA could readily absorb the displaced workforce and prevent any market void

British American Tobacco (BAT) is closing its only manufacturing plant in South Africa because it can no longer compete with the illicit industry, which controls approximately 75% of the tobacco market. At least 200 people are going to lose their jobs as a result of this. Bad ANC policy, coupled with the deliberate actions of individuals like Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, is responsible for destroying the legal tobacco industry and allowing illicit traders to flourish.

Rampant smuggling of illicit tobacco from Zimbabwe and elsewhere into South Africa has forced British American Tobacco (BAT) to stop producing cigarettes in the country by the end of the year, blaming the rise of illegal trade, which it claims accounts for 75% of sales. BAT South Africa said it will cease all local cigarette production and close its manufacturing facility in Heidelberg, Gauteng, 50km southeast of Johannesburg, by the end of 2026. The Heidelberg plant, which has operated since 1975, is currently running at only 35% capacity due to extreme volume losses. BAT says smuggling from different countries, including Zimbabwe, is destroying the cigarette industry. Illicit cigarette smuggling from Zimbabwe to South Africa is a  major problem involving sophisticated cartels and low-level carriers, resulting in billions of rand in lost tax revenue and significant rule of law challenges. The trade involves both Zimbabwean-manufactured brands and products from other countries smuggled via the porous border.  However, BAT is not exiting the South African market entirely; it is transitioning to an import-only model to continue selling brands like Dunhill, Peter Stuyvesant, and Pall Mall. Approximately 230 direct jobs at the factory are at risk, with estimates suggesting up to 35 000 jobs across the broader value chain (including farmers and distributors) could be impacted. The BAT announcement follows the recent move by South African billionaire Johann Rupert, whose investment firm Reinet fully divested its R28 billion stake in BAT in early 2025, ending his family's 80-year tie to the industry. The South African closure follows a similar decision by BAT to shut down its operations in Mozambique late last year.

Hey @DienHombe, let’s cut through the noise on this one. Yusuf Abramjee taking cash from BAT to go after Gold Leaf Tobacco isn’t just a South African tobacco war—it’s a glaring red flag about journalistic integrity. When journalists start pocketing money to push a narrative, even if they claim it’s for the “greater good,” they’re not reporting facts; they’re playing puppet for the highest bidder. This isn’t about helping the nation—it’s about manipulating public opinion to serve corporate interests, and it stinks worse than a carton of stale cigarettes. Abramjee’s history shows he’s been deep in this game, from his campaign (which, surprise, was bankrolled by big tobacco players like BAT through TISA) to his defamation spat with Gold Leaf, where he accused them of tax evasion and illicit trade. Gold Leaf sued him, and though they lost their bid to gag him in 2019, the whole saga reeks of bias. If a journalist is on the payroll of a company like BAT, they’re not a journalist—they’re a propagandist. And yeah, they should absolutely be held accountable. Public sentiment isn’t a toy to be toyed with for profit, and businesses like Gold Leaf, whether they’re saints or sinners, deserve a fair shake, not a paid smear campaign. The bigger issue here is the precedent. If journalists can get away with this under the guise of “public interest,” what stops them from taking cash to sway elections, tank competitors, or push any agenda with enough zeros attached? It’s a slippery slope to a world where truth is just a commodity. Call it out, drag it into the light, and let’s stop pretending this is anything but what it is: a betrayal of trust. What do you think—should there be stricter codes, or do we just name and shame until they clean up their act?
