The age of cancelling gender-critical voices is far from over. Across Europe, and especially in Germany, events are still being shut down with barely any public or political outrage. The Hamburg edition of the debate forum “Club Volantaire” (@club_volantaire), dedicated this time to the impact of queer politics on feminism, has lost its venue after pressure was brought on the owner, who feared economic repercussions if the event went ahead. The organisers describe the familiar patterns of social pressure and an increasingly narrow culture of acceptable opinion in which even feminists and critics from within the political left are no longer tolerated. The speakers are women’s rights advocate and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit @ingebellgermany, scientists @Ilse_D_Jacobsen and @Frollein_VogelV defending the current scientific consensus, and @TillRandolf warning about the effects of ideologically driven queer politics on trans rights themselves. From the statement of the organizers: “We are committed opponents of the pseudo-progressive neo-left, yet we would never attempt to shut down their events, regardless of where they are held. Such behavior reflects an authoritarian mentality fundamentally incompatible with democratic culture.” Protesters consider the views of these four individuals to be so morally unacceptable that others should not even be allowed to hear them. They follow a well-known pattern: political intimidation through reputational pressure, economic threats and social coercion. The problem runs far deeper than one cancelled event in Hamburg. Democratic societies have to be able to tolerate public discussion about sex, women’s rights and gender identity ideology. Please share this, talk about it and report on it. In our opinion, your decision to deboost our event is erroneous and based on a deplorable misunderstanding. We strongly deny that our event would be a case of "hate speech" or "discriminatory" against trans-identifying people. On the contrary, the film, screened at our event, aims to keep and open and constructive  connection between distressed youth and their worried but loving parents. It is moreover our opinion that a strongly felt gender-identification in young people, that is based on a sincere conviction, can never be harmed by an open exchange. Young people need all the support that they can find, and blindly excluding those who love them most from their lives is not necessarily the best option for them, but arguably an extremist and non-constructive position. Thank you for reconsidering your decision.

This is scandalous. Many of us rely on @eventbrite to announce and manage our events. Now the event management and ticketing platform company is de-platforming a public discussion scheduled for 29 May. The Belgian grassroots organisation Cry for Recognition (@cryforrecognit), which raises awareness about the impact of gender ideology and medical transitions on young people, is hosting a screening of "Generation Trans", followed by a discussion with filmmaker Jean-Pierre Roy, child and youth psychiatrist Sophie Dechêne, and Dutch clinician Roelien den Ouden, alongside Athena Forum’s Marianne Driessen. The film, which recently premiered in Montreal, features parents describing how their children were affirmed in a gender identity by professionals and guided towards medical transition. Cry for Recognition are using Eventbrite for ticketing: eventbrite.be/e/generation-t… A few days ago, they received this message from Eventbrite: “We have determined that your event may not be suitable for wide distribution on the Eventbrite platform, as outlined in our Community Guidelines … your event remains live on the platform but will not be discoverable without a direct link.” “We do not allow content or events that … disparage, discriminate against, or otherwise directly attack individuals or groups based on race, sex, ethnicity, religion, national origin, immigration status, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, or veteran status … We also consider hate speech to include incitement, promotion, or condoning of hatred or discrimination against a person or group of people based on the same set of protected characteristics listed above.“ No explanation was given as to how this event violates those standards. Cry for Recognition appealed the decision, making clear that the event is not discriminatory in any way and asking for a proper review. Today, Eventbrite responded: “We have diligently reevaluated your content…” - And the outcome remains unchanged, with no indication of what exactly is supposed to be in breach. Eventbrite is the leading self-service event ticketing and marketing platform for independent creators and mid-market events. It is hiding a film screening and discussion involving parents and clinicians that raise legitimate concerns about gender identity ideology. It is deemed unfit for “wide distribution” and hidden from public view. This is unaccountable gatekeeping of public debate and distortion of parental concern and professional dissent as hateful and discriminatory. People should pay very close attention to this.

Today, the European Commission adopted a Communication responding to the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) ‘Ban on conversion practices in the European Union'. We were relieved that the Commission stopped short of pursuing an EU-wide ban and will not seek to add conversion practices to the list of EU crimes under Article 83(1) TFEU. However, it plans to issue a non-binding recommendation next year urging states to introduce bans on so-called conversion practices, while continuing to mobilise its enormous resources and soft-power machinery to pressure governments into adopting such legislation. Gender identity has thoroughly captured the EU. The range of actions announced today is aimed at consolidating far-reaching regimes in some Member States, nudging reluctant ones off the fence, and laying the groundwork for the next political turn in resistant states and EU candidate countries. Broad opposition is growing across Europe, led by feminists, lesbian and gay rights organisations, parent groups, and an increasing number of clinicians and therapists raising concerns about the risks involved. Yet these voices are systematically excluded from the EU’s internal discussions. Bans on so-called “conversion practices” are deceptively framed. They invoke the brutal abuse once inflicted on lesbians and gay men, while applying that historical imagery to something fundamentally different. Framed around gender identity and expression, these bans risk harming the very people they claim to protect - particularly gender non-conforming children who may simply grow up to be lesbian, gay, or bisexual. Such bans entrench the unscientific belief that some children are “born in the wrong body” and should be placed on a path toward irreversible medicalisation. In practice, they make affirmation of a child’s self-declared gender identity a legal requirement not only for therapists, but for teachers, doctors, and even families. Making affirmation the only permissible approach to a child’s self declared gender identity is not protection. Young people struggling with their sex require open, exploratory and therapeutic support; their families deserve evidence-based care; and society needs honesty and clarity.

💥No EU ban on conversion therapy (but a full soft-power push) ⬇️ Today, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib presented their response to the European Citizens’ Initiative calling for “LGBTIQ+ conversion therapy bans” - effectively targeting talk therapy with young people grappling with questions of identity, sexuality and sexual orientation, with implications not only for therapists, but also for teachers, doctors and even families. Good and bad news: ❗️There will be no EU-wide ban: the Commission will not propose making this a “Eurocrime” or adopt binding legislation. ❗️Instead, it plans to adopt a non-binding recommendation in 2027, calling on Member States to introduce bans on so-called conversion practices. From a legal standpoint, little will change. In terms of soft power, however, significant resources and political will are being mobilised: ◘ promoting “good practices” from existing bans and encouraging all Member States to follow ◘ recommending complementary measures, including training for mental health and medical professionals ◘ requesting reporting from Member States on implementation ◘ expanding “structured dialogue” via the Expert Group on LGBTIQ+ Equality (Member States, Commission, stakeholders) ◘ launching an LGBTIQ+ policy forum with civil society organisations (first edition before end of 2026, focused on conversion practices) ◘ commissioning a study on conversion practices No binding law, but a comprehensive soft-power framework that goes beyond symbolism: consolidating far-reaching regimes in some Member States (Spain, Malta), nudging reluctant ones off the fence (Netherlands, Austria), and laying the groundwork for the next political turn in resistant states (Latvia). Much of the preparatory work for these measures will likely be carried out by the Irish Presidency, a reflection of how well in advance this has been planned. Gender identity has thoroughly captured the EU, with loyalty and belonging eagerly performed from the top down - orchestrated for #IDAHOBIT, flags go up at the Commission building to secure applause from transactivist NGOs.
