You won't hear a peep about this from Farage, Tice or Jenrick. Under the Tories, up to 400 hotels were being used to house asylum seekers. With Labour, there are now just 185, with 11 more hotels re-opening to the public, saving the taxpayer £65 million a year.
Alex Norris MP@AlexJJNorris

There were more than 400 asylum hotels under the previous government – that number has been more than halved, with 11 more closing this week. Labour is bringing the asylum system under control.

A girl is gang raped outside a church, there’s CCTV - crickets from the police. A crowd of scared residents gather in town - Police out in force in riot gear. None of us is safe under this government.

False. Britain has "built" plenty, in short order. To the extent that obstructions are procedural and legal, they are designed. That was the intent of the Climate Change Act, among other legislation. It's not some accidental bloating of bureaucracy. Nuclear planning and safety regs are not arbitrary. Even if we accept that it takes a year or so longer to build an NPP because of planning, that hardly accounts for the immense cost of HPC. HPC is expensive because successive governments of all parties didn't want to deal with the public, and then it fell to an energy sec. from the party with the most overt hostility to nuclear power, which stood at that election on a promise to abolish it, to oversee the deal. Moreover, the coalition government he was part of had committed to the destruction of existing conventional and nuclear generating capacity, and the rapid roll-out (contrary to the OT's point above) of renewable energy, at extremely high prices, thus signalling both desperation (to keep the lights on, among other things) and willingness to accept extortionate rates. Even more moreover, the "deal", such as it was, comprised a consortium that eventually (after much chaos as parties pulled out) included Chinese finance and engineering expertise that has beset progress as anxieties and antagonisms developed -- we had lost the ability to develop our own NP programme.
Ben Graham@BenGrahamUK

Britain isn’t failing to build because of cost, it’s failing because of red tape. Projects get stuck in endless loops of studies, consultations, and compliance exercises that drag on for years before anything actually happens. Look at Hinkley Point C, delayed, over budget, and crawling forward at a pace that would be unacceptable anywhere else. Then you hear about environmental studies such as the infamous fish disco where £700 million will be spent to save 0.083 salmon and 0.028 sea trout per year. That’s not progress. That’s stagnation dressed up as due diligence.

This is the reason why we can never reform healthcare in the UK — or even have a sensible debate about it. The moment anyone suggests alternative/additional ways of funding health Labour rushes out privatisation smears and claims US private health insurance is being proposed. Labour has been doing it for decades. It explains why the NHS is effectively beyond reform. The two worst health systems in the rich world are in America and the UK. It’s why nobody has ever copied them. It would be mad to go from ours to theirs (or vice versa). But Europe is awash with health systems that can call on several sources of funds, including many with compulsory public health insurance schemes. They have better health outcomes than the NHS. They are free at the point of use (like the NHS). Most of them are better funded. But Labour puts them out of bounds, refuses even to discuss or consider. So patient care suffers. NHS struggles on. Labour is always telling us we need to get closer to Europe. It’s where we belong. But not when it comes to health, where it insists no lessons can be learned. Pretty pathetic, really.

Nigel Farage's plan to move to an insurance-based healthcare system would leave you to pick up the bill.

Rachel Reeves has managed the impossible: she’s finally found a tax so vindictive it can make the heir to JCB – a symbol of British manufacturing since 1945 – talk openly about taking his family firm and leaving Britain altogether. When your “growth strategy” is so hostile that one of the country’s biggest employers says it would be easier to become an American business than stay under your inheritance‑tax raid, you’re not governing – you’re liquidating the productive middle of the economy to feed an insatiable Treasury. Labour promised to make Britain a safe home for investment; instead Reeves is sending a very simple message to every family business and manufacturer: build it here, and when you try to pass it on, the Chancellor will turn up like an executor with a crowbar.

The ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz is deeply damaging. Getting global shipping moving is vital to ease cost of living pressures. The UK has convened more than 40 nations who share our aim to restore freedom of navigation. This week the UK and France will co-host a summit to advance work on a coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping when the conflict ends.
