It’s beyond serious dispute that civilian harm was not just an unfortunate consequence of Israel’s strategy in Gaza, it is part of that strategy. Alarms were sounded both internally and externally. Jake muted them. This performative handwringing is disingenuous and offensive.

Jake Sullivan on Gaza: Too many innocent people died in Gaza as a result of Israel's military operations. I woke up every morning and went to sleep every night thinking about what we could do to try to alleviate the suffering. I have also said that genocide, from my perspective, requires actually an intent to do the destruction — and not to fight a terrorist foe while conducting operations in a way that killed too many civilians. Should we or could we have done more? I ask myself that question every day. And the answer must be yes, of course, because too many people died and suffered. I think about what opportunity here or what chance there or what move there, and I play that back in my head.

This is another example of the celebritification of government actors, and it's bad. The Transportation Secretary should not be a reality TV star getting money from companies he's supposed to regulate. He should be a boring government bureaucrat whose name I almost never hear.

Yes, I’ve heard the argument that trophy hunters support conservation efforts by paying huge fees for hunting privileges, etc., etc. That doesn’t change the fact that the impulse that drives them—to revel in the unnecessary slaughter of an animal—is innately messed up.

only (or primary) way to sustain themselves. Trophy hunting, by contrast, is the exact opposite. It literally involves taking pleasure in the act of killing, and, by extension, the pain and suffering that act causes the victim.

Sure, NYC is expensive, but I don’t agree with the idea that it’s difficult, nigh impossible, to live here on less than $100k per year. Working as a writer, I’ve never made that amount in my life, but I felt pretty comfortable in the city on my most recent salary…

When I lived in NY 2003-2014 I was poor ($45k a year salary for a 60+ hr work week)my rent was $750 a month for a room in my apt off Graham Ave. I'd eat a box of stove top stuffing or ramen every night for dinner, bloated from the sodium content. I didn't enjoy the city because I literally couldn't afford to go out. When i did meet up with my trust fund friends, I'd order seltzer. After bills I'd have about $50 of spending money for the week. I can't imagine anyone surviving on less than $100k these days.
