It's framed as an issue mainly because the stadium project got tens of millions in taxpayer money (with housing subsidies diverted), yet ownership stayed hidden. Kawhi, his uncle, and former agent invested via new "RIFC" LLCs right as the Aspiration deal collapsed and he signed a Clippers extension. That same circle is already under NBA scrutiny for alleged side payments to skirt the salary cap. Secrecy + public funds + timing is what fuels the questions.

The biggest question mark surrounding Kawhi Leonard's investigation, especially if it drags on past August, is when this trade will be officially completed.
The teams agreed to wait until a decision was made on the investigation, but this could inch closer to training camp.

Adam Silver stated a few weeks ago in Las Vegas that he wanted the Kawhi investigation done this summer. Now, it could drag on well past the summer.

I asked Adam Silver earlier this month if it was realistic to see this investigation wrapped up this summer. Barring a settlement, it's hard to see how that happens.

@BullsLead The Pacers had a need at center so they traded for their need and the Clippers are over the cap and not going anywhere as a franchise. Not really a willingness as it’s more so necessity.

@mathomp_501 Nah, it all depends on if they find us/Kawhi guilty, then there would be an appeal. If no smoking gun and no guilty verdict, then no appeal and no reason for the trade to go into training camp.

The investigation by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen, & Katz law firm is just the FIRST step in the Kawhi Leonard Aspiration investigation and it certainly seems possible that there is no resolution by training camp, per @johnhollinger “The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement specifies that a cap-circumvention case must be tried before a system arbitrator and then potentially go through an appeals process before any penalty can be handed down by the commissioner.” (nytimes.com/athletic/74537…)
