@DavidSacks when we reach artificial, super intelligence how do you justify humans working in the workplace slowing down the economy? Genuine question You might as well just have UBI

"Paying a living wage" is not the answer and is a contributing factor to inflation. This is what socialists get wrong about the debate. The actual discussion should be "why is shit so expensive to the point wages are a discussion?" Why is a burrito that cost me 89 cents just 15 years ago over $5 now? Why is housing more and more unaffordable? Why can't people easily pivot to higher paying positions/jobs? Why is fast food now a career choice instead of a stepping stone? I don't think Erica would like the answers nor the solutions to these things, and ironically nor would the boomer.

“Get a better job” is not the answer to people being unable to pay their bills. Every job should have to pay a living wage. If you don’t believe that, then you believe as a society people who do necessary jobs should permanently live in an under class.

"the Ukrainians currently have an advantage in drones, which is due to the following factors: The Ukrainians have more expensive and high-quality materials for the manufacture of FPV drones and fiber optics, cameras with better resolution, meaning they can see the picture much better, longer flight time, and longer flight range. In addition, the number of drones and workshops where they are manufactured in the occupied territories is increasing." -Russian milblogger Diary of a Paratrooper

I saw people arguing about how old American civilization is vs Chinese civilization. One point I would clarify is that if you approach it like an alien American civilization didn’t begin in 1776 or even 1607, it’s a British descended civilization. There’s more genuine cultural continuity between America and old England than modern China and the Han dynasty or whatever

@KinderheimRune Most of them haven’t been killed, they left after the war began and will likely return when it ends. The demographic situation is grim but these doomer posts go too far.

Ukraine's population is now 22 million! Before WW2, Ukraine actually had a higher population than France! Ukraine 1991: 52 million France 1991: 57 million France 2026: 70 million Ukraine 2026: 20-25 million Predicted in 2022 that Ukraine would end the war ~18 million people.

Jeff, this is another terrible idea that won't die, like UBI. The problem with it is that it creates the wrong political incentives. The higher the "no-taxes" floor goes (and we already have a pretty high one due to the net effect of government transfer payments) the larger the constituency constantly clamoring for more gibs is, and the more difficult it gets to build a political bloc against taxes going even higher on an ever narrower segment of the population. It's a very slippery slope, and the logical outcome is visible in places like California where states are absurdly dependent on tax revenue from a handful of very high earners. Who then respond to incentives and bail out. Goodbye revenue base, hello debt death spiral. This is why a flat tax - no income brackets at all - is the best policy and in the long term they only stable one.

Zero out taxes for the bottom half of earners. A nurse in Queens shouldn’t be sending money to Washington. Washington should be sending her an apology.

I remember a time in college where a simple $10 bet with a roommate that I wouldn't get an A on the hardest exam in the undergrad econ department resulted in me cramming it all in the night before and getting a 97. It makes me wonder if there is a practical way to implement a schema for paying employes for completion of tasks by x date, as opposed to traditional salary or contractor terms, where time is the variable for payment. Maybe my brain is just wired differently from pro MTG as a kid and pro poker as an adult, but I feel like this could really align incentives between employers and employees. Implementation without taxing the employer's attention and time is the main hurdle for building such a thing, but it felt like a neat idea. Sweatshop-style payments upon completion certainly aren't motivating for many people, but for some wired like I am, it could be a big incentive aligned. That being said, I'd always prefer traditional payment schemes to this just for piece of mind and management of funds.
