Especially since most of the OG creatives who made R* what is was have left since RDR2 released , this includes some very important people. There’s a newer, younger generation there now. It’s also worth mentioning that the writing and characters for the DLC in GTA Online have been awful and ridiculously corny. Hopefully that’s just them being lazy with the cash cow they have and not indicative of 6 in any way though.

@GameRoll_ Great track record of some of the greatest games ever made. It's why I'm willing to give benefit of the doubt. With that said a lot can change in 8 years and we've seen that with countless studios. I can't see them failing but I also don't see a reason to blindly trust.

Yep. Seeing the PC section get smaller and smaller was depressing. On top of that , MS pushed Games for Windows Live and the Windows Store at the same time which were straight up dreadful to use (not to mention places like Direct2Drive). This is why Steam gained in popularity over the years ever since. MS treated PC like the unwanted step child compared to Xbox, it opened the door for Steam to come in and take over what MS should have offered back then. People just don’t realize what it was like back then and why things are the way they are today.

Just to make things crystal sparkling clear: PC being all digital was forced upon us. In the late '00s most retailers started phasing out physical PC games as the 360/PS3 was selling like crazy. Steam was our only option for the longest time Nobody heard our cries
PC Gamer@pcgamer

In case you haven't heard, Sony recently announced that it will stop producing physical game discs come 2028. But Daniel Ahmad, a videogame market analyst and director of research and insights at Niko Partners, argued in a post on X that we've all done this song and dance before. pc-gamer.visitlink.me/ZV13tS #pcgamer #pcgaming #sony #playstation

Nah, this is just silly. You can’t just dismiss GoG and the fact that Steam has lots of games that aren’t DRM or the fact that as soon as today you have user options to remove it vs a PS5 user , who has to wait for many many years from now to get an emulator working that may or may not work or have zero options for DRM free whatsoever. These are miles apart from a user’s perspective.

GOG doesn't have all games and many come to the platform many years after release. Consoles are eventually emulated even the PS5 is in talked of being emulated at this moment. The logic is just bad. Either they're all bad or none are I'm sorry. Most solutions are user created. The best case is 1.5 platforms on PC that try to do it right but even there you technically don't "own" it. Even GOG on their own website state you still have a revokable license. GOG User Agreement – GOG SUPPORT CENTER share.google/kBrpiMYiq2QLcV…

That’s a very big deal though and the biggest difference between being on an open platform and a closed platform. You can actually own your digital games on PC (GoG is 100% drm free btw and for Steam there are curators to follow that tell you if it’s drm free and can be bypassed and backed if not). On a console you never have that option, unless you jailbreak it and essentially turn it into open hardware like a PC in 5 to 10 years when it’s available later but know that not all games will run well either. These are not the same. Trying to say they are and it’s all the same is just flat out wrong.

@d0zilla @totallynotretro Yes, those are user based solutions. Consoles are eventually emulated so by your logic it should be no big deal. We should be mad at all of them imo. It's silly to just be upset with one.

Yes, digital rights suck , no argument here. The difference is , on pc , you at least have relatively simple workarounds to remove Steam’s trivial DRM (lots of guides to do it). There are other ways to acquire games as well on PC being an open platform that I don’t partake in (but would if I was stripped of my purchases).

That's not all PC. That's not every dev. Steam and GOG are distributors primarily. Most devs push out new modern games as revokable licenses based games. I'm sure there are a few games that say you "own" the game but the better majority are revokable licenses. Even if Steam says you can back it up you still have the same crap rights that you do with Sony. Our rights suck, and all of the companies suck. Some just less than others. I wish people would stop sweeping for Steam. They just proved they can be pushed around by payment processors. You think they won't go further if they were forced to?

@MicBlades21 @ponderlest @Azreal51265232 The issue will be losing physical discs to rip though after 2028. There will need to be a method to extract the games from the ps6 hard drive, which will likely be encrypted. Wonder if this will be a major road block going forward on top of the usual hardware emulation.

@ponderlest @Azreal51265232 Soon with AI and static recompilation, you won't need an emulator at all. You will just be able to play any PS5 game on a PC. Then, the PS6 will have the same thing done to it much faster. Lol

Silly comment. Steam is far more than a Storefront , it's a social hub for Gamers, even when using other storefronts and apps, which many do, they just don't compare with Steam's overall package (family share, return policy, curation, forums, chat, community features, streaming & clip recording, wishlist, SteamVR, achievements, etc.) Despite being on the top, Steam still continues to add features and doesn't sit on it's hands. People aren't going to intentionally chose a much lesser platform instead. At the end of the day, the onus is on other companies to compete.

@LambdaGen Yeah, celebrating the monopoly that is steam is such a great past time for the Cult of Steam. Competition breeds innovation. When Steam is the ONLY platform, and the industry is fucked, you guys will be having organs over Steam "winning" even though You actually lost.

Possible but highly unlikely. I do backup most of my stuff with external drives though , albeit not everything. The good part is, you can find GoG installers at many places outside of GoG if it did ever go down (as well as torrents of course). So there are at least options on PC. Overall I’m far less concerned with losing PC games than I am with console digital platforms being closed off systems.

@d0zilla @mrhardcoremode @GOGcom Unless you download every game installer you ever bought, you won't be able to get access to your games in case something happens to GOG. And i don't think you are going to do this. Also, you don't have to tell me how GOG works. I have been using along with Steam for 15+ years.

This is actually true but also a bit of a gray area imo. Jailbroken consoles are essentially PC's at that point, at least in spirit as you're converting them into open hardware from a closed system. You're taking control of the hardware and adding function to it. Also, outside of a few specific PS5's from the original batch, it's not possible to jailbreak the current gen consoles, at least not for several years from now and isn't really an option outside of last gen for the most part. Do I have this correct?

@hunter_hellman @mooreslawisdead You're speaking from Sony's POV, not the customer. From the customer's POV, you absolutely have choice. Buying physical is often times cheaper and on sale independent of the Sony controlled digital storefront. This choice is going away.

You never had other purchasing options. The only option you had was purchase from Sony. The only difference between the two was the number of middle men marking it up. Sony also doesn’t set prices on any games other than their own. 90% of the market on their platform is non-Sony games.

This further proves a theory of mine - this was a RECENT decision from the TOP. Sony was NOT planning to "do this all along with PS6". No documents I have suggest this, and everybody I've spoken with behind the scenes was surprised. Here's what happened: youtu.be/VTrH5rNCRUE

@oslja @mrhardcoremode @GOGcom That's not how it works. When you purchase a game on Gog, you get the complete game as an executable to store on your own. It works on as many PC's as you'd like with no internet checks, completely offline.

Need the data broken down by the types of games. Games that actually work from a disc like Single Player (Not live service MP games) and also that even have a physical disc option. Many in that Digital category fall into this which is a disingenuous comparison and not telling the full picture.
