From my understanding, a place like Mercedes-Benz Stadium is losing out on tons of typical revenue in the form of concerts and other events in order to preserve the grass surface that’s been installed. They’re willing to do it for the prestige of hosting late-stage WC games for this once-in-a-generation event.
But it’s not a viable permanent fixture, even if the NFL were to provide funding to teams for upkeep. The grass surface renders the stadium as not only a sports-only facility, but a one-sport facility. I wish it were possible to have grass permanently inside the stadium as both sports’ athletes benefit, but I don’t think it is.

Atlanta is going through a different variation of growing pains. The “Atlanta Way” that dominated from the 1960’s to the 2010s (effectively a truce that gave the Black population political power while the White population ran the Business community) completely fell apart in 2020.

I feel like Dallas is the city with the most untapped potential. Dallas could completely take over if they wanted to. IF they wanted to. I lived in Uptown in the 2010s and loved it. Really what would take Dallas to the next level is if they just embraced their own identity more. What I mean by that is right now, Lower Greenville hates on Highland Park, which hates on Deep Ellum, which hates on Plano Can't we all just get along? You don't really see that in, for example, NYC. You don't see Astoria beefing with Meatpacking District. People have different preferences, sure, but that's what a city is for. Dallas has tons of hot girls, great businesses (more arriving all the time), airport with global reach; it's not going to be another NYC or London, but it could be another Chicago, without all the crime. I think the missing gap is the identity. Austin knows what it is. If Dallas figures out what it is, it could take off.

@HedgeDirty This entirely depends on the city. This is more often true in Sun Belt cities who grew dramatically after suburbs were in fact normative. In the Northeast the power base still largely resides in the city.

In America, the suburbs are normative. Cities belong to their suburbs, not the reverse. The deal is that cities are allowed lib out as much as they want so long as they don't wreck anything that matters to the burbs. Break that deal and state govt will remind you really rules

There is so much misinformation and downright lies about data centers that it’s impossible to not be convinced this is a foreign propaganda campaign, and it’s working.
This article is a total crock. Most of the water went to things like pouring concrete during construction.
This is also a tiny amount of water compared to things like golf courses.

@AndyMasley The framing sucks. Local EcDev are used to framing things in terms of job creation so it’s pitched to communities in comparison to what a similarly sized manufacturing facility would create, when it should be compared to how many jobs were created by the land’s previous use

Yeah turns out if you build a big computer that doesn't require many people to operate, it's going to cost a lot relative to how many jobs it creates, but it can benefit the area via tax revenue. This metric is about as meaningful as saying a bridge doesn't create many jobs relative to how much it costs to build.

@atlurbanist I think it depends where exactly but options are still lacking more often than not. In SE Cobb there are a couple of really great spots, most are just passable, and the city (esp W Midtown) is way more convenient for us than other areas with better density

This is a serious, non-judgemental question because I really don't know: is there a lack of great restaurants in the Atlanta suburbs? I see so many people driving into the city for dining and I was under the assumption that suburbanites didn't need to do that anymore.

Busy so I won’t be watching NYR live, but Dylan Garand’s debut is a long time coming. Smart, mobile goaltender. Does well when facing large volumes of shots. High compete level. He has a real chance at an NHL career.
