@realKyleKeegan I have a morbid curiosity about what specific policies Tuberville would mandate. Spell out all the details. Sharia law prohibits theft and murder.

I was doing a crossword in the pub & said to my Scottish mate, "I'm stuck on this one: Trapped on a desert island, eight letters, starting with M." He said, "It’s Marooned." I said, "Oh ok, I'll have a gin & tonic then please!"

@NewYorker The Greek name for Greece's capital is "Athina" (A -THI - na). If this is a trick, I'm missing it entirely.

@el_roding @OliverKamm @krishgm /2 If it's a complaint about the definition of "unique" being all-or-nothing (something dictionaries don't require), then you'd see more complaints about people using "unique" without qualification, when something is merely remarkable.

@el_roding @OliverKamm @krishgm I have never heard a complaint about something "unique" being something remarkable so long as it's not in the context of degree or relativity. Therefore the complaints really seem to be about grammar-- and that would be wrong. /1 of 2

I know all these ghastly phrases have become normal as English evolves but “very complete” is very ugly. Complete, almost complete : fine. But “very complete” when something is not complete at all bothers me. I’m probably tired! Goodnight.

@GrammarTable I remember reading about this kind of question in the context of a newspaper's style. I think it said that NY Times avoids made-up "titles." And maybe there's a version of #2 that would require commas before and after the name. And maybe with the name before the descriptor.

@NJTRANSIT_HBLR Was this related to an event involving someone being hit with a chair? Something looking like a press release was posted to an individual's Facebook page, but I can't find any reporting online.

It’s not “logical”: there are 12 months, up to 31 days and an infinite number of years so the progression from 12 to 31 to infinity is the “logical” assumption of order. The British just want to be annoyingly different. 😑
Dr_Prodworthy@Dr_Prodworthy

@WilliamShatner Spock would point out that DD/MM/YYYY, used by the Brits/entire non-American world, is more logical than MM/DD/YYYY. Not even Canadians use the US system, which is strange, b/c they copy everything else.

@WilliamShatner There is a perfect correspondence between dd/mm/yy and mm/dd/yy, so it's illogical to claim one is logical and the other not. The same information is conveyed, and there's no discernible difference in the ease of communication.
