Laughing about dead Palestinian babies on a hip American TV show, while parroting Israeli propaganda. Sounding confidently substantive about a two year human tragedy, while simultaneously dismissive enough, indifferent enough to sound American cool, capable of entertaining and eliciting laughter from an audience. Distracting from the barbarous shredding of families and babies in Gaza, since distraction will get airtime, and the show must go on.

Every American must avoid spreading such language, and we must make a habit of calling it out, especially in our own communities and political groups. That’s more effective than focusing on the other side’s dangerous speech. We can best control ourselves, and our own.

The attempt to kill former President Donald Trump was awful, and all too familiar in American history. What is far too common right now is dangerous speech - rhetoric that normalizes and even encourages political violence in lieu of democracy.
