@anton_chuvakin I've heard that it takes more money for the death penalty, since it allows so many more appeals, than to simply jail them for life. I've also heard that it doesn't have a deterrent effect. This would seem to contradict its claims on that point.

Most of us care about the disadvantaged, but if you read any/enough economic history you’ll learn that governments sell snake-oil and that central planning causes more harm than good. John F. Cogan’s ‘The High Cost of Good Intentions’ is an insightful read if that previous sentence seems off to you. Gift it to the curious women in your life
