@rtwlz oh sick, is it the bit that is currently called "Dirt Alley" on Google Maps? It's right near where I live – I'll come by and admire it sometime!

and yes we really do own it! the alley is in the sunset, off kirkham between 23rd and 24th. it's technically private property, but we legally can't block traffic (rip our dreams of operating the shortest toll road)
but legally we CAN paint whatever we want on the pavement

my friends and i bought a foreclosed alley in san francisco. it's an actual road that cars drive down!
we're letting the entire internet design a mural on it. submit a drawing, vote on them, and the top 1,280 get painted on the pavement permanently ⬇️

I have taught board games many a time. Here is the order.
1) How Victory is determined (ultimate goal)
2) Set up (have them do it)
3) turn sequence. Go through each step.
4) easy strategy tip. For example, in Cthulhu Wars, I tell them, "If you're not sure what to do, it's always good to try to earn a spellbook."

Episode 39817 of Germany doing unserious things for the 21st century: a review I left on Google Maps for a restaurant in Berlin got flagged as being defamatory and auto-removed.
My review content? 3 stars. That's it.

@patio11 Agreed, but the optimal level of heroics is also not "critically load-bearing".
The other missing dimension from the discussion is whether the heroics are being applied to some frontier innovative work or a BAU system that should really be more hardened than it is.

(I have a complicated relationship with heroics, and to coin a phrase, the optimal level of heroics is not zero.)

This is both a really rough adjustment for individuals/orgs and also a culture one can reasonably opt into or not.

Google has an internal "let it break" essay about a hero engineer whose hard work ends up being a net negative (by masking the underlying issues). My manager sent me that essay when I was trying too hard to get the collective TensorFlow unit test suite green.

@chrisalbon can skip the angle grinder problem with Bay Wheels, too – just outsource storage, maintenance, and theft protection! The bikes certainly aren't as nice but it's a fair tradeoff

Ebikes (with an angle grinder resistant lock) was a huge unlock for me. Basically 30min max to get anywhere and infinite free parking.

@202accepted although next question: possibly it's a case of requiring the method where really you want an outcome? e.g. make the job requirement "get a reduced price for item X within Y minutes" and then see how they solve it?

@AlecStapp This is why I unironically recommend an economics degree as the best choice for a successful adult life. Pair with a second degree for maximum utility, but econ alone provides exactly the awareness you're talking about!

@sdamico exactly, and the solution to the whole monthly fare thing is to just incorporate it into the scanning system – it should automatically detect when you've reached the weekly/monthly fare cap and then stop charging you after that. Sydney's system works this way!

I was on my schools student council and we were never allowed soap dispensers in our bathrooms so I vehemently argued for it and finally got them in and then the first day we had them i saw someone scissor kick them off the wall and then we never got soap in our bathrooms again
