PhD-position alert!
Our sleep research group in Norway is hiring 2 phd students for a project on machine learning and cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia. We are a really nice bunch, and are excited to add new members. Please spread the word!

hey #SleepPeeps! In our latest paper we found that evening blue-depleted lighting resulted in reduced REM sleep fragmentation and arousals. This seemed to be independent of the effects on circadian rhythms. No effect on REM-density. nature.com/articles/s4159…

As a clinician working daily with people with #insomnia, often driven by anxiety about #sleep, it’s disappointing when others in the sleep field overstate the impacts of sleep loss and fuel sleep-anxiety. @MaintenancePod maintenancephase.buzzsprout.com/1411126/9716285
English

@DavidCunnington @MaintenancePod So true. I often get asked by media about harmful effects of artificial light in the evenings, and I always find it a challenge to balance that discussion so as to not induce more anxiety around sleep, but still inform people.

How does insomnia develop? A nice video on how insomnia starts and the factors that keep it stuck. #insomnia #sleep #cantsleep @Sleep_Hub sleephub.com.au/how-does-insom…

At least the title of plastic surgeon finally makes more sense if we at some point need to remove the plastic in our bloodstream

@davidsonper Thanks for replying! My thoughts as well, dreaming occurs across sleep stages. I was not able to DM you.. Not sure why?
English

@DanielVethe Would also be happy to talk more. Please DM. It is a little complicated as we do not really know what happens in the brain when we dream. We know what happens in the brain during REM sleep, but REM sleep and dreaming are not synonymous
English

hey #sleeptwitter! We are planning a short 10 min, children's (~10yrs) tv-programme about what happens in the brain during dreams. Meant to reduce anxiety about dreams and show how cool science is. Thoughts on what to include? The important bits for kids to know? (we have PSG)

Oh no! My oura ring is telling me I only got 4% deep sleep! What should I do?
Nothing...other than ignore the sleep stage information. Sleep trackers are not accurate when it comes to sleep stages (see ref below).

@PhyllisZee @JCedernaes @NUFeinbergMed Haha, yeah, and also what keeps things interesting i guess ;)

Interesting new study on how #light exposure during #sleep may impact our autonomic nervous system (HR ⬆️) & insulin sensitivity (⬇️) in young adults.
- Melatonin not ↕️
- Possibly via ⬇️ slow-wave sleep

@DanielVethe If you have enough time you could include a part on how much some of the animals sleep. I did this for a group of 8yo and they loved it.

Yes! Finally someone got to testing a bunch of these commercially available blue-blocking glasses! So many to choose from, spoiler alert, not all of them are as blue blocking as they claim to be!

We need viable tools to help diagnose delayed sleep wake phase disorder (DSWPD) in the clinic. That's why I like this paper that uses bed/wake time and light info from an actiwatch to predict circadian phase. I could see this being used clinically doi.org/10.1038/s41598…
