Tangentially related: Legal writing is indicative of how laws have become total abstractions. Imagine reading this impenetrable, dense prose all day. I’d kms This is, imo, a symptom of the legal profession becoming mental masterbation for the top 0.5% It’s literally a game!
Justin Slaughter@JBSDC

Here’s Alito on section 2 “Compliance with Section 2, as properly construed, can provide such a reason. Correctly understood, Section 2 does not impose liability at odds with the Constitution, and it should not have imposed liability on Louisiana for its 2022 map. Compliance with Section 2 thus could not justify the State's use of race-based redistricting here."

@OfficeHoursDrB @lxeagle17 @sam_d_1995 Defund the police movement? Bail reform in cities? Prision reform. Using reform loosely. Were you in a coma for 2 years or was your head in the sand? Before you say it’s made up, the democratic candidate for president in 2024, defended defund in 2020, so did Mamdani.

@lxeagle17 @sam_d_1995 What specifically did the Dems do on crime between 2019-2021? You keep saying that, but the example you gave was about the death penalty. Quite frankly, nobody is voting based on the death penalty. Are you saying that Dems should repudiate giving a damn about police brutality?

In our new poll today, Trump approval is at -22. Two months ago, it was at -15. Meanwhile, the generic ballot has gone from D+6 to...D+6. There's a good argument to be made that Dems are hitting a bit of a ceiling here due to choices they've made. theargumentmag.com/p/why-democrat…

@AlwynS18 They are the largest state sponsor of terrorism. I don’t care what justification you come up with. IAEA has also said they have denied inspections. Idk why they have the world fooled but they are suicidal and it doesn’t matter why.

@dannyrussell53 you're just repeating talkin points, Danny..let's look at the facts. they agreed to the most intrusive inspections under the JCPOA & limited their enrichment to 3.67% under the deal..that could easily hve been extended if nukes were a real concern but the USA unilaterally pulled

US “continuing the blockade for two more months”…. !!! Even if some folks in the administration are delusional and mad enough to think that will significantly raise the chances of Tehran capitulating, it is most certainly a recessionary fog horn for the world! Even assuming it “capitulates” simply to get the US naval blockade lifted, what is the guarantee that Iran won’t try to revert to its nuclear programme somewhere down the line, holding out the threat that any attempts to derail it will see a repeat of the Hormuz blockade? It’s time to read the writing on the wall: Iran’s nuclear weapon is the Strait of Hormuz and there is no getting around it unless you can redraw that geography.
Gregory Brew@gbrew24

Discussion at the WH today hinged on precisely this issue. Some argue that Iran will cut a deal to prevent costly damage to its oil fields. Others are more skeptical--Iran has not changed its position after a month of war, why would more economic pressure force it to change now?

@DonivanLattimer Guess not. You can start to cleanse yourself by refunding their unethical taxes. Do you know how many 10s of billions of dollars that is? NYC is the financial capital of the world. Y’all have no idea the can of worms you are opening.

Trump gets elected in 2024 because of a crappy economy. Canadian Liberals preside over the same crappy economy, headed for landslide defeat. Trump wins -> Canadians polarize on Trump not the economy -> Liberals win. Canada continues to be stuck in an economic death spiral.

The allure of NYC is extremely valuable for attracting top junior talent — new grads want to live in the big city. A big glittering office in Midtown or the Financial district is a powerful recruiting tool for a law firm or a hedge fund. But once people start having families, they want more space, good schools and lower taxes. Banks and law firms that have historically been pyramid-shaped with tons of junior associates and analysts are going to change as AI automates a lot of the lower-level tasks. As these firms become less concerned with constantly recruiting big classes of entry-level professionals and more focused on lifestyle for midlevel people, NYC will seem like less of an asset. That will be doubly true if the municipal government is hostile to these firms and it is significantly more lucrative to operate elsewhere. If Citadel cancels its $6 billion investment in its NYC headquarters, that is going to be a big signal to other firms. Mamdani wants an additional billion in taxes aimed at finance and law firms, and all of these businesses are facing stress from AI and may decide it is a good time to reduce their NYC footprints.
Negligible Capital@negligible_cap

Ken Griffin will now be meeting with NY governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday following his threats to pull NYC plans for Citadel after Zohran used Ken’s penthouse for his eat the rich promotional video. The two will be reportedly discussing the future direction of NYC. Ken said overnight that Mamdani’s decision to single him out demonstrated a “profound lack of judgement”. He also noted “what upset me was the personal attack”. Guess it’s now on Kathy to try and do some damage control

the era of free compute is over just like we reminisce of the days when an uber across town was $5 due to VC subsidy we will look back on the opus 4.6 era with a halcyon glow “remember when frontier agents were 200?” but they have enough demand now time for IPO the servers are too hot and your compute bill is too low welcome to the renaissance of local compute as people realize a model they run at home is a model they can afford a model the can experiment with a model they can trust with their data and their secrets
Arnav Gupta@championswimmer

We were being subsidised this much? Wow. Cursor claiming the $200 plan is actually $5000 was actually true it seems.

Do @ezraklein and @DKThomp ever actually look at data? Here are construction openings and construction employed. Data exists. Look at it. If you don’t understand it ask someone who does. But the takes are abysmal and intellectually lazy as fuck.

@VandanaHari_SG @VandaInsights It’s about real politik. The US stands alone in military strength and economic strength. Iran threatens pretty much everything, it’s an easy win. This isn’t 4-d chess. You want oil and don’t have a navy? Position yourself accordingly, this isn’t 1980. Who wants a nuclear Iran?

They could say it -- 1) if they see it that way 2) if they feel threatened. Why should one assume they want/need to say it? It's not about "love" or "hate" towards a nation. Just don't start a war that you don't know how to end, far less knowing how to get what you wanted out of it.

Can't think of a better example of widespread Gell-Mann Amnesia than people believing John Oliver's takes on virtually any topic. If you work in AI or even just use AI intensively, it's patently obvious how misleading and plain wrong he is about the subject, rendering his conclusions useless. Now ask yourself: why would he be any more likely to be right about healthcare policy or the border or anything else?
