Thoughts from Detroit RM: -Another solid week leading to a T8. I lost two shots on the back nine which always hurts but pleased with the way I played and also the way I handled myself mentally. -I really felt like I had a chance after 9 but just couldn’t get any more birdies going. -The bogey on 15 was a real bummer. It was a PW, and after a par on the par 5 14th, I knew I had to make a move and I just pushed it slightly. It ended up in the long hay in the penalty area and made bogey. Wish I could have that one back but that’s golf. -I think the redesign was solid. These bunkers and long hay was no joke. I wish they had kept the big tree on 7 but maybe it fell down or something. -I wasn’t sure if I was going to play Wyndham but after this week, there’s a real chance to make a run to the playoffs. There’s a Korean saying “when the tide is right, you ROW” The tide is solid right now so it’s time to freaking row. Let’s get to East Lake.

@jerrynixon SQL/DB knowledge in general has really died out over the past 15 years or so. Used to be a given. I know it's not as necessary, but understanding it really helps.

Recently, at a local regional conference, I spoke on Database Patterns for Developers. One of my earliest patterns is to denormalize complex tables into a view. I looked out at a room of about 110 developers with confused faces. Hands went up, and questions followed: - A what? - Where is the data in the view stored? - How is the view updated when the tables change? - Can we delete the tables once we have the view? Here's the point. We assume (let's say I assume) developers know more about SQL than they really do. Code-first and ORM tools have allowed developers to sidestep the need to understand databases and believe it takes care of itself. Their biggest misstep is thinking the trivial data in their dev and test environments (with thousands of rows) reflect the scope and scale of production data (with millions of rows). More importantly, perhaps most importantly, if we start at the 200 level, we've lost almost everyone with the first sentence.
