Not a huge Trump fan but appreciate his commitment to ruthlessly punish every last one of the people who voted for him.

This premise was a core part of the 2013 immigration bill that got 69 votes in the US Senate over Stephen Miller’s strenuous objections.

@chamath Trump, by accident or on purpose, successfully isolated China. None of those countries can afford to side with China out of fear that the US will retaliate.

I’ve observed a few hi stakes negotiations over the years and one tactic I’ve seen work well over and over is when you find the leverage to bring your opponent to the edge of the cliff, hold them over the cliff so they see the abyss and threaten to push them off. Turns out when you then don’t push them, but back off, they often develop Stockholm syndrome and give you more than you would have otherwise because they are thankful for the reprieve. I don’t know that this is the plan here but the conditions for that are the same. 75 countries are on a 90 day shot clock to get a grand bargain done. Based on what I’ve heard from some of them, they are thankful for a chance to egress off the tariff highway and find a new normal - even if that’s much worse for them than what it was previously.

@PhilipWegmann I’d rather we bank the tariff money and stop buying necessities like food and antibiotics from that disgusting horror show of a country.

Trump says at NRCC dinner, “we don’t necessarily want to make a deal with them.” “We’re happy the way we are,” he says of tariffs, “taking our $2 billion a day, but they want to make a deal.” Companies are coming back to the US, he says—“I know what the hell I’m doing.”

@crampell Maybe Ron Vara produced this fake-math. Couldn’t have been ‘Dumber-than-a-Sack-of-Bricks’ Peter Bizzarro. Everyone knows he is a low-rent charlatan, ex-con and ne’er-do-well.

Maybe a dumb question but where is the capital for building and outfitting all the new factories supposed to come from if the stock market is in a swoon and interest rates are high?

“The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine.”
Secretary Kennedy@SecKennedy

I came to Gaines County, Texas, today to comfort the Hildebrand family after the loss of their 8-year-old daughter Daisy. I got to know the family of 6-year-old Kayley Fehr after she passed away in February. I also developed bonds with and deep affection for other members of this community during that difficult time. My intention was to come down here quietly to console the families and to be with the community in their moment of grief. I am also here to support Texas health officials and to learn how our HHS agencies can better partner with them to control the measles outbreak, which as of today, there are 642 confirmed cases of measles across 22 states, 499 of those in Texas. In early March, I deployed a CDC team to bolster local and state capacity for response across multiple Texas regions, supply pharmacies and Texas run clinics with needed MMR vaccines and other medicines and medical supplies, work with local schools and healthcare facilities to support contact investigations, and to reach out to communities, including faith leaders, to answer any questions or respond to locations seeking healthcare. Since that time, the growth rates for new cases and hospitalizations have flattened. The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine. I’ve spoken to Governor Abbott, and I’ve offered HHS’ continued support. At his request, we have redeployed CDC teams to Texas. We will continue to follow Texas’ lead and to offer similar resources to other affected jurisdictions.

What will Trump’s haters do if his tariff play brings country after country to the negotiating table, resulting in bilateral trade agreements that make U.S. trade more free than ever?

While the USTR tariff calculator cites the findings from Cavallo, Gopinath, Neiman & Tang (2021) it is not entirely clear how they use our findings. Based on our research, the elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs is closer to 1. If that figure were used instead of 0.25, the implied reciprocal tariffs would come out about four times smaller.
Trade Diversion (Jonathan Dingel)@TradeDiversion

USTR: "The elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs, φ, is 0.25. The recent experience with U.S. tariffs on China has demonstrated that tariff passthrough to retail prices was low (Cavallo et al, 2021)." Cavallo et al: φ is 0.945. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

We did a lot in Wisconsin, but we fell short. We must realize and appreciate that we are the LOW PROP party now. The party has been remade. Special elections and off-cycle elections will continue to be a problem without a change of strategy. We are the party of welders, waiters, and plumbers. We are the party of people who work with their hands, who shower before and after work. Politics is an afterthought for many of our supporters. They have common sense and American values, but they are voters who must be CHASED. Democrats have become the college indoctrinated, institutionalized, and government dependent HIGH PROP party. They live for politics. It is their religion. You may hate Donald Trump, but he resurrected a dead GOP back to life. Voters who weren't on anyone's data rolls came out of the woodwork to vote for Donald Trump. Our movement must begin to fully fund the infrastructure to match the Democrat machine. Our ideas are better. They're actually popular. But we need to match like for like. We need to out organize Democrats. We need to match their fundraising advantage. Let Wisconsin be a wakeup call. Let it be a call to return to the frontlines. We won in November, but to save the Republican we must string together multiple victories and that starts in 2026.
