Oh, well. Just give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Makes sense

Trump's economic advisers are saying "not it" when asked about who came up with the formula to calculate different countries' tariff rates Bessent, Tuesday: “I wasn’t involved in the calculations of the numbers” Miran, Monday: “CEA was involved in calculating a variety of means of estimating—approaches to thinking about non-tariff barriers.... The president chose to go with a formula relating to closing trade deficits suggested by someone else in the administration.”

USTR: "The elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs, φ, is 0.25. The recent experience with U.S. tariffs on China has demonstrated that tariff passthrough to retail prices was low (Cavallo et al, 2021)." Cavallo et al: φ is 0.945. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

NEWS: The GOP SALT Caucus co-chairs are rejecting a $25K SALT cap, saying Republicans will have to go higher to get their votes for the tax bill. Cap is $10K now Here's what @RepYoungKim & @RepGarbarino say in a new statement shared w/ us More in Midday: punchbowl.news/archive/4425-m…

Just figured out where these fake tariff rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us. So we have a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.
