Last night I went to a Cheltenham Lit Fest event organised by the Gloucestershire Writers Network, to hear my colleague Mike D. D. Johnston read from his new novel “Disnaeland”. Such a funny, brilliant novel. It’s a privilege to work alongside writers such as Mike!

Farewell #Cheltenham and thank you. 17 years, some pain and sadness, but enough love and laughter to fill a lifetime. Thanks to everyone who has lit up my life here.

@MartinGoodman2 That sounds absolutely terrifying, Martin! I'm so glad you're all right and that you will soon be home. Please take good care. PS I imagine this happening to an Iggy Pop soundtrack youtube.com/watch?v=SaP7qm…

An interesting night. I was sent flying across the bonnet of a car and into its windscreen, then to the road. People have been lovely and the hospital impeccable. I've got off lightly and will be home soon.

Of the 36 academic jobs to be cut @uniofeastanglia 31 are in the Humanities. No discipline will be spared, we are told. We have many strengths in HUM. I run the world-famous Creative Writing programme. This is us in Sept 2022 in Zimbabwe, with new writers. @uealdc changes lives.

@workingclasslit I would dig in and fight for the functional importance of speculative writing!

@dd_johnston Also, I feel like she's doing the "creative/speculative/experimental writing is frivolous; we need functional/useful writing that makes us think about reality" rhetorical move, which I just find annoying tbh

@workingclasslit Aye - agreed, in so far as that's definitely what dystopian fiction *should* do. But in an ideological climate of fear and defeatism, maybe they communicate something else?

@dd_johnston Can't help but feel this misunderstands what dystopian fiction is all about, no? E.g. when Jameson says science fiction doesn't give us images of the future but defamiliarises and restructures how we experience the present
