As someone who grew up christian, the religious imagery in Evangelion feels like it's there more so to evoke the feelings and existential dread associated with religious concepts such as God, eternity, sin, etc, rather than being actual symbolism for christian themes.

It seems we've come full circle on aspect ratios. Back when every household started getting TVs in the 1950s, Hollywood started making movies widescreen to differentiate movies from TV shows so people would still go to the theater. They came up with different ways to achieve this. One was to shoot "open matte", where the movie would be shot on regular 1.375 academy film (which was slightly wider than 4:3) and then cropped to the wider aspect ratio in post, but this wasn't ideal because it meant a lot of the recorded image went to waste. Another method was to change the shape of the film gate in the camera so that they only recorded the narrow portion of the film they wanted to, which came with the benefit of more frames for a given length of film, but then they still had to blow up the image to fit the wide theater screen, so it would be blurry and grain would be more noticeable. A short-lived solution was "VistaVision", where they would load the film into a specially designed camera sideways to record wider frames on the same film stock, but this used up the film faster and theaters needed special projectors for it. This was sort of the precursor to IMAX. Eventually, they started using anamorphic lenses which would record the widescreen image scrunched up horizontally so it could fit on the regular 1.375 film frame, and would then be stretched out to the intended aspect ratio during projection. The advantage was they could use all of the same cameras and projectors, all they needed to change was the lenses. This became the standard method for producing widescreen movies. But then home video formats such as Laserdisc, Betamax, and VHS started coming out, and Hollywood wanted to start selling copies of movies for people to watch at home. But TVs at the time were all 4:3, so a widescreen movie wouldn't fit the screen. One solution is to put black bars on the top and bottom, but then you're essentially shrinking the image to fit on the TV screens which were already small back then. So most distributors opted for "pan and scan", where the widescreen movie would be cropped to 4:3. This wasn't ideal because it required cutting off about half of the image. But then open matte saw a resurgence. A movie shot on 1.375 academy film with regular spherical lenses was already more-or-less the right shape for a 4:3 screen. So then they started filming movies in open matte, but composed shots so that everything important would fit the cropped widescreen version for theaters, then they could just use the uncropped version for the home video release. The problem with this was it required filmmakers to be conscious of two different aspect ratios when composing shots. This stifled creativity, but they lived with it. Eventually, TV manufactures started making screens 16:9, and aspect ratio chosen because you can fit all of the other common aspect ratios within it with minimal wasted space, and TV screens were getting bigger, so Hollywood didn't have to worry about cropping to fit them anymore. But now we have these IMAX theaters that project in 1.43, which is close to the 4:3 of old TVs. So now any movie filmed in that format is essentially being filmed in open matte, and they have to frame for both the 1.43 IMAX screen, and regular widescreen theaters, all for the sake of creating an experience you can't get at home, like when they first started making movies widescreen.
